COLUMBIA, Mo. -- (FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.) With two weeks before the Big 12 Championships, the weather has finally started to break in favor of the Missouri Track & Field teams. Friday at the Arkansas Twilight in Fayetteville, the Tigers used the great conditions to post several solid performances that will catapult individuals high in the rankings entering championship season. Among the best marks of the day was senior Nate Englin's (Shoreview, Minn.) winning performance in the men's shot put where, with a toss of 62 feet, 5¾ inches (19.04m), jumps into the NCAA's top 10 by obtaining a USATF Olympic Team Trials `B'-qualifying standard.
Englin, this season's Big 12 Indoor Champion in the event, had his best throw of the day, and of his career, in the final round. His previous personal best of 62-¾ (18.90m) came in April 2006 and with today's mark will likely move into the NCAA's top-10 marks of the season. Sophomore Andy Oaker (Steelville, Mo.) was third with an outdoor personal best of 57-1 (17.40m).
Sophomore Brian Hancock (Monroe City, Mo.) had the best in-season competition of his career in the men's pole vault with a second-place clearance of 17-5 (5.31m). Only Hancock and Kansas' Jordan Scott cleared the height, but with fewer overall misses, Scott was awarded the day's victory. Only 10 collegians this season entering the weekend had cleared higher than Hancock did today. Hancock, MU's indoor school record holder, and Scott attempted 17-9 (5.41m), a bar that would top Tom Jordan's outdoor school record by over two inches. Hancock's overall personal of 17-5¾ (5.35m) best came at a street-vaulting festival last August in Kentucky.
The Tiger men also had a great evening at middle distances. Senior Tipper O'Brien improved his NCAA-qualifying time in the 1500-meter run with a second-place run of 3:44.30. O'Brien was part of a four-way photo finish that went to Iowa State's Hillary Bor who took the tape by only a few thousandths of a second as they both officially recorded 3:44.30. Former Tiger Neville Miller was third, only sixth hundredths behind both O'Brien and Bor with a 3:44.36 clocking.
Freshman Rick Scheff (Atlanta, Ga.) joined Mizzou's long list of sub-1:50 runners at 800 meters with a career first NCAA-regional qualifying clocking of 1:49.97, finishing seventh overall.
Also this evening, the men's 4x400-meter relay team of Ryan Blackwell, Jerron Forte, Nick Adcock, and Chris Davis ran a season's best winning time of 3:11.38. Freshman Hope Harris (Clinton, Mo.) won the women's discus with a toss of 148-5 (45.24m) while earlier this afternoon junior Krishna Lee won the women's hammer throw with a 188-3 (57.37m) toss. Senior Jason Morris (St. Louis, Mo.) won the men's discus with a 173-6 (52.89m) throw.
Senior Trisa Nickoley will compete tomorrow in the women's 800-meter run at the Ward Haylett Invitational in Manhattan, Kan.
