LAWRENCE, Kan. - For the second weekend in a row, high winds accompanied members of the Missouri track & field squads. After Wednesday, the first of four days at the 81st Kansas Relays, Tiger sophomore Nick Adcock (Kansas City, Mo. / Oak Park HS) leads the men's decathlon by 143 points with a five-event score of 3,905 points, 70 ahead of his personal-best pace set last year at the Big 12 Championships.
With tomorrow's five events remaining, Adcock is currently ahead of fellow Tiger frosh Lars Rise (Trondheim, Norway) who stands second at 3,762.
On the very windy day at Memorial Stadium, Adcock posted a would-be personal best in the 100-meter dash to start the day with a 10.99 clocking, the second-best in the field. The benefactor of a 4.1 meters-per-second wind (which disqualifies the PR) helped Adcock to 863 points in the opening event.
After a wind-aided (4.4 m/s) long jump of 22 feet, 5¾ inches (6.85m), Adcock set a new outdoor personal best in the shot with a toss of 43-1 (13.13m). Adcock managed a clearance of 6-4 (1.93m) in the high jump despite the winds before recording a 49.25 time in the 400 meters to close the day.
Rise timed 11.53 in the 100 meters, marked a wind-aided 23-3½ in the long jump, threw to 47-10½ in the shot, lept over 6-½ (1.84m) in the high jump, and ran 51.26 at 400 meters to score 3,762 points on the day.
Wichita State's Chris Dickman stands third at 3,726. Tomorrow the decathletes will compete in the 110-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin, and 1500-meter run.
In the women's heptathlon, Kaela Rorvig, competing unattached and redshirting this season is currently fourth at 2,992 points.
Tiger sophomore Lauren Begany stands eighth at 2,815 after tying her personal best in the high jump with a 5-3¾ (1.62m) clearance.
Competition continues at the Kansas Relays through Saturday. Thursday will end competition in the decathlon and heptathlon and include the men's and women's hammer throw.
A few Tiger middle-distance runners are also slated to compete in the Arkansas Invitational on Saturday.
