Columbia, Mo. - The University of Missouri women's tennis team (8-11, 3-7 Big 12) fell to No. 34 Wichita State, 6-1, Thursday afternoon at the Green Tennis Center.
The Tiger senior duo of Erika Josbena Amanda Pratzel earned a victory at No. 2 doubles, defeating Stephanie Dalmacio and Anna Egorova, 8-6. Josbena and Pratzel nabbed an early break to quickly jump out in front of their Wichita State counterparts. Pratzel's well-placed lobs and smart net play, in addition to consistent play from Josbena, carried the Tiger duo from there. The two survived a couple of late breaks to clinch the match and their third straight win. The win was Josbena's 61st career doubles win.
But the Shockers were able to take the No. 1 and No. 3 match. At No. 1, WSU's Madina Rakhim and Florentina Hanisch took down Raquel Wagner and Chrissy Svetlic, 8-0. Katelyn McKenzie and Charlotte Bellis lost at No. 3, 8-3, to Lenore Lazaroiu and Jackie Richey.
The Shockers took a 1-0 lead into singles play, and were able to take five of the six matches. They improve to 21-2 overall, including a 4-0 mark against Big 12 foes.
Mizzou's lone point of the day came from the No. 6 spot, where Bellis defeated Torrie Browning, to earn her 12th victory of the year and fourth of the spring. Charlotte jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first set, but Browning came back to get as close as 5-4. Bellis won the next game to take the first set, 6-4. She struggled in the second set, losing, 6-1, but she had more fight in her. The two then played a third set tiebreak, because at this point, the overall match was already decided. Bellis was able to win important long rallies and take the tiebreak, 10-8, to win the match, 6-4, 1-6, 10-8.
At No. 1, Svetlic lost to No. 67 Madina Rakhim, 6-3, 6-1. Rakhim is now an impressive 22-1 on the spring.
Pratzel lost a close first set to Hanisch at No. 2, 7-6 (2), and then fell in the second set, 6-0, to lose the match.
Josbena lost a three-set match at No. 3. She took the first set, 6-3, but fell in the second, 6-1, and third, 6-2, to WSU's Lazaroiu. Wagner and McKenzie lost their matches at No. 4 and 5, respectively.
One More Match After Thursday's match against Wichita State, the Tigers will have a quick turnaround before they host No. 41 Texas in their last match of the year. The contest will begin at noon, and the public is encouraged to attend.
