Columbia, Mo. - DeMarre Carroll scored a game high 29 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Mizzou Black squad to a 101-95 win in the annual Black and Gold intra-squad scrimmage at Mizzou Arena on Tuesday evening.
The Big 12 Conference's Preseason Newcomer of the Year hit 12-of-19 shots and chipped in the 11 boards, while fellow big man Marshall Brown scored 24 points and added four caroms to lead the Black to the six-point win.
Not to be outdone, junior sharpshooter Matt Lawrence and sophomore J.T. Tiller scored 24 points apiece to pace the Gold Squad. Lawrence hit 7-of-11 three-pointers, while Tiller hit 11-of-20 shots and ripped away three steals.
Overall, the Mizzou Black team had four players reach double-figures, including senior guard Jason Horton who tossed in 11 tallies, while recording a game high eight assists. The Dallas, Texas, native also had two steals in 36 minutes. Sophomore Keon Lawrence narrowly joined Carroll and Brown in the 20-point club, finishing with 19 points, three boards, two assists and a steal.
Mizzou Gold had five total players reach double-figures, with Leo Lyons (16 points, nine boards) and Vaidotas Volkus (15 points, nine boards) narrowly missing double-doubles. Junior transfer Zaire Taylor finished with 11. Taylor will now sit out the remainder of the 2007-08 season per NCAA transfer rules after coming to Mizzou from the University of Delaware.
Missouri returns to action on Saturday in its exhibition opener against the University of Missouri-St. Louis at Mizzou Arena. Game time is slated for 3 p.m. and the contest will be televised live on the Mizzou Sports Network.
