Lubbock, Texas - The Tiger Cross Country team, led by sophomore Dan Hedgecock (St. Louis, Mo.) earned sixth place on the men's side at the 2007 Big 12 Conference Championships in Lubbock, Texas. The Tiger men finished with 198 points, three points better than rival Kansas at 198. The women finished with 193 points, placing them 10th overall.
Hedgecock continued his strong 2007 campaign by finishing 18th overall in a field full of strong competitors, just three spots shy of earning All-Big 12 honors. Junior Garett Jeffries (Clarkson Valley, Mo.) finished 36th overall with a time of 25:58 on the challenging trek at Rawls Golf Course. Billy Bell (Chesterfield, Mo.) continued his strong season notching a 39th-place finish, third best on the team. Bell finished the race in 26:05.
Freshman Dan Quigley (St. Louis, Mo.) was another bright spot for the Tigers. In his first ever post season race, Quigley finished 48th overall. Quigley had not run with the team since the Roy Griak Invitational on Sept. 29, but set a new personal record, edging his time at the Griak by one second. Quigley clocked in at 26:24. Larry Paul (Marthasville, Mo.) ran in his first race of the season. Paul registered a time of 26:33 placing him 54th overall. Tim Cornell (Columbia, Mo.) and Phillip King (Columbia, Mo.) rounded out the Tigers top-seven finishers. Cornell finished in 59th place while King finished just behind him in 63rd.
The women earned a 10th-place finish despite a gutsy performance from freshman Kinsey Farren (Dallas, Texas), who finished in 26th place with a time of 21:53. Despite the 10th place finish, the fourth through 10th place teams were separated by only 37 points, making it a very tight race. Senior Kate Greer (Marshalltown, Iowa) finished five spots behind Farren in 31st. Greer clocked in at 21:53. Angela Potrykus (Evergreen, Colo.) was the Tiger third place finisher as she came in at 37th place overall. Potrykus, who had been one of the Tigers top runners all season, clocked in at 22:08.85, in one of her best races this season.
The Tigers next four finishers all finished within five spots of each other. Ellen Ries (Ryan, Iowa) placed 49th overall after spending much of the season nursing an injury. Emily Baker (Wildwood, Mo.) finished 50th with Kasey Kimball (Eureka, Mo.) placing one spot behind her in 51st. Carolyn Rauen (Cincinnati, Ohio) came in at 53rd overall as she clocked in at 22:36.85.
Colorado continued it's dominance over the Big 12 Conference as both the men and women claimed the overall title. Colorado has won in all 12 years of the Big 12 on the men's side, and 11 of 12 on the women's side.
Next up for the Tigers will be the 2007 NCAA Midwest Regional in Peoria, Ill. Hosted by Bradley University, the race will be held on Nov. 10. The Tigers have enjoyed recent success at Newman Golf Course in Peoria as two weeks ago the Tigers swept the Bradley Classic with Hedgecock claiming the overall title. The course also was friendly to many Tiger runners as 17 runners set new personal records on the course. The Tigers will look to repeat that feat at the Midwest Regional.
