No. 7 Texas Defeats No. 12 Missouri, 3-2, in Overtime

Austin, Texas - The seventh-ranked Texas Longhorns (11-2-2, 4-1-1 Big 12) defeated the 12th-ranked University of Missouri women's soccer team (10-4-0, 4-2-0 Big 12), 3-2, in overtime, Friday (Oct. 19) in front of 1,779 fans at Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas. Junior Janelle Cordia and sophomore forward Michelle Collins each scored early goals, but the Longhorns answered back with two in the first half and one in overtime to win their fourth conference game.
The Longhorns scored on their first quality chance in overtime, which came off a Stephanie Logterman free kick in the 97th minute. Logterman sent it deep into the box, where Texas' Kasey Moore headed it past Mizzou goalkeeper Tasha Dittamore to give UT the 3-2 overtime victory, and hand the Tigers their second overtime conference loss in a row.
"We're in a tough part of our schedule playing good Big 12 Conference teams," Tiger Head Coach Bryan Blitz said. "So I think for that reason, the losses are going to happen. No team is going to dominate in the Big 12. But the staple of this team is our fight...We're still competing for the Big 12 Championship and growing and getting better towards our goal of making, and playing well, in the NCAA Tournament."
Mizzou got off to a hot start to begin the game, scoring in the third minute, their second quickest score of the season. Freshman midfielder Katya Hessel sent a corner kick to the far post, finding fellow freshman Alysha Bonnick. Bonnick stopped it and sent it towards the front of the goal, where Cordia took it and put it in for her first goal of the season.
The Tigers would keep the pressure on early, taking three more corner kicks and two shots before Texas registered a shot or corner.
Collins took the second of those two shots, and scored, just a little more than five minutes after Cordia's early goal. This time sophomore Kristin Andrighetto, who came into the week 11th nationally in points per game, was credited with the assist, her seventh of the season. The play started with Andrighetto dribbling down the left side of the field. She then passed it ahead to Collins, who was about 16 yards out. Collins took the pass and shot it to the right of Texas goalkeeper Dianna Pfenninger, who came out to challenge the play. Collins' goal was her ninth of the season, which ties Bonnick for second on the team.
Texas would gain momentum after Mizzou's second goal, however, with the Longhorns out-shooting the Tigers, 7-3, the remainder of the half.
"We came out and scored two quick goals, against a good Texas team," Blitz said. "But we took our foot off the gas after the goals, and you can't do that against Texas."
In the 28th minute, Nikki Arlitt took off down the middle of the box and shot the ball to the right of a diving Mallory Forst, into the net. Forst started the game in goal, before Dittamore took over after halftime.
About eight minutes later, in the 36th minute, Moore scored off a corner kick by Courtney Gaines. Gaines sent it a high kick to the far post, where Forst was able to get a hand on it, but Moore headed it past her for her seventh goal of the season.
The Tigers and Longhorns went into the half tied at 2-2.
Neither team would score in the second half, although each squad had more than a fair share of chances.
The Tigers had a late chance, in the 89th minute. Bonnick took a shot, but it was blocked by a UT defender. Hessel got the rebound and took a hard shot that sailed just high and wide of the net.
Earlier, freshman Krista Kruse got a good look at a goal in the 71st minute, as she dribbled through the defense into the box, and shot it towards the right post. Pfenninger was there to catch the shot, keeping the score tied at 2-2.
UT's best chance to take the lead came in the 84th minute, when Caitlin Kennedy kicked a shot wide from a few yards in front of the goal. Kennedy received a cross from Emily Anderson, who sent a soft pass across the box to the left side, where Kennedy slid and kicked it just to the right of the goal.
Tigers have not won in Austin since Sept. 13, 1996, the first game of the series. Mizzou defeated the Longhorns, 1-0, in that game, but have gone 0-6 since.
Attendance Note:
The Tigers played in front of 1,779 fans at Myers Stadium in Texas' capital city, the highest attendance to watch a game involving the Tigers since Oct. 22, 2006, when they played in front of 3,285 fans in College Station, Texas, against the Aggies.
Off To Snowy Boulder?
After playing in beautiful conditions in Austin, Texas, the Tigers will travel to Boulder, Colo., for a cold game Sunday. According to the National Weather Service, temperatures will not get out of the 30's and there is a 50 percent chance of snow.
