The Gold squad took a 2-0 lead in Mizzou Baseball's Fall World Series as it won the completed game one, 10-0, then took the second game by a score of 5-0 on Friday at Taylor Stadium.
Game one was completed on Friday after rain forced play to be suspended on Thursday night. The Gold team jumped out to an early lead in game one, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Junior Steve Gray drove in the first two runs of the game with a double in the first. Seniors Dan Pietroburgo and Lee Fischer followed with back-to-back singles with Fischer's base hit knocking in the third run of the inning.
Pietroburgo had two hits and scored twice for the gold team.
The fourth run of the game came in the bottom of the second inning, when junior Kyle Mach delivered a two-out RBI double.
A short, but heavy, rain shower fell in the bottom of the third inning halting play until Friday. When the game resumed, the Gold team was quick to add to its lead, scoring five runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a commanding 9-0 lead. It added a run in the fourth on its way to a 10-0 win to take a 1-0 lead in the series.
Freshman Nick Tepesch, junior Ryan Gargano and freshman Sean Young combined for the shutout.
Game two was a pitchers' duel through the first four innings between junior Rick Zagone and sophomore Kyle Gibson.
The first run of the game came in the top of the fifth inning when Fischer led off the frame with a home run for the Gold team. Fischer finished 3-for-4 in the game.
Gold expanded the lead to 4-0 with three runs in the sixth inning and then added a run in the seventh inning.
Zagone took the win, allowing just two hits in six shutout innings, while Gibson struck out nine in five innings for the Black team, but was handed the loss.
Game three of the Fall World Series will be played at Noon on Sunday at Taylor Stadium. Junior Aaron Crow is scheduled to take the mound for Black while junior Ian Berger will pitch for Gold.
