Columbia, Mo. - The Missouri Women's Swimming and Diving team will travel to Ames, Iowa for a busy two-day set beginning Friday. The women will compete in the Big 12 Relays Friday at 9 a.m. and jump back into action in a dual with Texas A&M Saturday at 10 a.m. in Iowa State's Beyer Hall Pool.
Last Year's Matchup
The Tigers fell to the Aggies by a score of 181-101 in last year's matchup. The women won four events, two swimming and two diving, in the loss.
2006-07 Big 12 Relays
Mizzou finished in third place at last year's conference relay meet. The Tigers recorded runner-up finishes in three events, including the 100 free, 1500 free and 300 breast relays.
Relaying a Message
The Tigers have yet to drop a relay race on the young season. Mizzou swam to top honors in the 400 free and 400 medley relays Friday vs. Indiana and returned the following day to sweep all four relay events at the Show Me Showdown.
Colleen'g on Gordon
Sophomore Colleen Gordon has been nothing short of outstanding in the first week of the 2007-08 season. Gordon broke open her sophomore campaign with wins in the 200 IM and 500 free Friday vs. Indiana and returned to the pool the next day to collect wins in the 50 fly, 100 fly and 200 IM. The Texan ended the weekend undefeated in the 200 IM and now boasts five wins on the season.
Patter on the Back
Senior Taye Patterson deserves a pat on the back after her efforts in the opening weekend of the season. Patterson helped lead her 400 free and 400 medley relay squads to victory against the Hoosiers and carried this momentum into Saturday's Show Me Showdown, where she earned wins in the 50 back, 100 back and 100 IM.
Captaining the Tiger Ship
Junior and team captain Lori Halvorson helped steer her team in the right direction in the season opener against Indiana by recording wins in both the 100 and 200 free. Halvorson was narrowly edged by Patterson in the 100 IM the next day at the Show Me Showdown.
Melnychuks Up a Few Wins
Junior diver Kendra Melnychuk has lit up the diving well in early season action. The Canadian dove to a win on the 3-meter board and took runner-up honors in the 1-meter portion of the competition in the dual with Indiana. Melnychuk claimed another 3-meter win and led her Mizzou squad to victory in the 1-meter diving scramble competition in Saturday's Showdown action. Her performances on Saturday also qualified her for NCAA Zones.
Move Over Avril
New to the team this year is another Canadian sensation, Lauren Lavigna, whose name sounds very similar to pop star Avril Lavigne. Lavigna rocked in her first meet as a Tiger, claiming wins in the 200 back and 1000 free vs. Indiana. The freshman returned to the pool for her second win in as many days in the 200 free at the Show Me Showdown.
Not Too Sh'Abby
Fellow newcomer Abby Zepeda also impressed at Saturday's Showdown. The Arizona native displayed a third-place performance on the 3-meter board to help the Tigers earn a third consecutive Show Me Showdown crown.
