MIZZOU FOOTBALL IN-GAME NOTES
#11 Mizzou at #6 Oklahoma - October 13, 2007
Pre-Game Notes
Mizzou was looking to go 6-0 for the 2nd consecutive season, which would be a first in school history. Prior to last season's 6-0 start, Mizzou's last 6-0 start came back in 1973...
Last week's 41-6 win over #25 Nebraska was the 2nd-largest margin of victory for Mizzou in a Big 12 Conference game. The 35-point margin was second only to a 38-point win against Iowa State in 2003 (45-7)...
Mizzou entered the game having run only 9 offensive snaps (5 rushes/4 passes) while trailing in a game this season, which, according to www.cfbstats.com , is the fewest in the nation entering today's play. Mizzou trailed for 9 offensive snaps in the season opener against Illinois due to a blocked punt recovered for a TD by the Illini in the 1st quarter. The 9 snaps while trailing leads all teams, and is trailed by USC (2nd - 15), Oklahoma (3rd - 21), Ohio State (4th - 26) and Kansas (5th - 34)...
Post-Game Notes
Adam Crossett's 40.5 average on four punts was his second-best mark of the season, behind only last week's 46-yard average (on two punts) against Nebraska.
The Tigers held Oklahoma's running attack to just 118 yards on 33 carries. They entered the game averaging 216.2 yards per game on 40.5 carries per game...
Mizzou out-gained Oklahoma by a 418-384 margin, including 361 passing yards to OU's 266.
TE Chase Coffman had a career-high nine catches for 95 yards to break his previous best of eight set in the 2005 Independence Bowl vs. South Carolina. His 99 yards in that 2005 I-Bowl are the career-best in that category.
1st Quarter
Junior TB Jimmy Jackson got the first start of his career tonight, subbing for the injured Tony Temple, who did not make the trip due to a sprained ankle suffered last Saturday against Nebraska...
Mizzou took the opening kick and made 1 first down before having to punt, but got the ball back after just one play when DE Stryker Sulak stripped Juaquin Iglesias after a reception, with DB Darnell Terrell recovering on the OU 38-yardline. It was the 13th turnover forced by Mizzou's defense this year (6 fumbles, 7 INTs)...
WR Jeremy Maclin gave the Tigers a 6-0 lead at the 10:12 mark as he scored on a 5-yard end around. He was sprung by a great block by LT Tyler Luellen to clear the path. It was Maclin's team-leading 7th TD of the season - his 2nd rushing to go with his 3 receiving TDs and 2 punt return TDs entering the game...
Mizzou's TD drive took 6 plays, covering 38 yards and took 2:57 off the clock. The TD after the turnover upped Mizzou's totals this year to 47 points scored off of 13 opponent turnovers. Coming into tonight's game MU's foes have scored 28 points off of 7 Tiger turnovers...
Oklahoma responded with a TD drive to tie the score at 7-apiece. It marked the 1st offensive TD allowed in the 1st quarter this season by Mizzou's defense. The only other TD scored by opponents in the 1st quarter so far came on a blocked punt covered for a TD in the opener by Illinois...
After Oklahoma got an interception on MU's ensuing possession, the Tiger defense held the Sooners to a field goal. On the following kickoff, Mizzou's Jeremy Maclin returned the ball 56-yards to the OU 44-yardline. That was MU's longest kickoff return since Shirdonya Mitchell returned one 89 yards at Texas Tech in 2002...
2nd Quarter
Mizzou came into the game leading the nation ranked 1st in 3rd down efficiency, converting at 59%, but the Tigers misfired on their 1st 4 3rd down tries of the night before connecting on the first one...
After OU drove for a TD to push out to a 17-7 lead, senior NOSE Lorenzo Williams (Midwest City, Okla., native) recorded a big QB sack late in the quarter that helped snuff out a Sooner drive, and give the ball back to MU's offense. The sack upped Williams' total to 15.5 for his career, which moves him into a tie for 7th place on the Mizzou career list, along with C.J. Mosley (2002-04) and Xzavie Jackson (2003-06)...
Mizzou's offense responded with a huge drive right before half, driving 9 plays, going 85-yards down to OU 2-yardline, before having to settle for a 19-yard Jeff Wolfert FG that made it 17-10 at halftime. Mizzou's offense had been held to a total of 84 yards prior to the drive...
The last drive by MU evened out the statistics a bit, as OU held a slight edge in total yards at halftime, 202-169, including 188-to-154 in passing yards. Mizzou, despite rushing for only 15 yards on 11 carries, outrushed the Sooners by one yards, with OU gaining 14 net yards on 13 tries...
Mizzou's 17-10 halftime deficit broke a string of 8 straight games in which MU held a lead at half. It marked the first time that MU has trailed at half since game #10 last season at Nebraska, when Nebraska held a 27-6 halftime lead...
Maclin, who came into the game as the nation's leader in all-purpose yardage (214.0 ypg), had 137 all-purpose yards in the 1st half alone, including 79 on 2 kickoff returns, 39 on 2 receptions and 19 on 2 rushes...
Mizzou ended the half by making 4 of its last 5 3rd down tries on offense, to end the half 4-of-9 overall...
3rd Quarter
Oklahoma made it 9 points off of 2 Tiger turnovers, when they intercepted Maclin to end MU's 1st offensive possession in the half, and then drove 56 yards in 9 plays to take a 23-10 lead at the 9:30 mark (the extra point was no good)...
Maclin got his 2nd rushing TD of the night on MU's ensuing possession to cut the deficit to 23-17 at the 4:41 mark, when he sped around left end on an end around for 10 yards and the score...
Mizzou got the ball back on the ensuing kickoff as OU's Juaquin Iglesias fumbled on the return. LB Connell Davis recovered the fumble at the OU 46-yardline, marking the 2nd fumble recovery on a kickoff this year by Davis (his other came in the opener against Illinois)...
Mizzou capitalized by driving 8 plays for a TD to take a 24-23 lead with 1:30 left. TB Jimmy Jackson, who made his 1st career start tonight, went over right tackle for 4 yards to regain the lead for the Tigers. It was the 1st TD of the season for Jackson and the 4th of his career...
The quarter ended with the Tigers holding a 24-23 lead... Mizzou held a 319-275 advantage in total offense, including a 250-235 edge in the passing game. The Tigers held Oklahoma to just 40 yards on 20 carries (2.0 avg) through 45 minutes of play...
4th Quarter
Curtis Lofton's fumble recovery for a touchdown was the first for a Mizzou opponent since Kansas State's Zach Diles had a 46-yard return for a TD last year in Columbia.
That fumble was Mizzou's third of the game, which equaled the three TO's - also a fumble and two interceptions - by the Tigers against Western Michigan on Sept. 16 in Columbia.
Mackey Award candidate Martin Rucker hauled in his third TD reception of the season in the 4th quarter. He finished with six catches for 35 yards.
