Reaction to the Death of Former Soccer Player Meggie Malm

Sept. 21, 2007

COLUMBIA, Mo. - The University of Missouri learned Thursday evening of the death of former Tiger soccer player Margaret "Meggie" Malm, who passed away from injuries suffered in a car accident in her home state of Iowa on Thursday afternoon. She was 22 years old.

"This is a tremendous loss to the Missouri soccer family," said Missouri soccer Head Coach Bryan Blitz. "Meggie was the ultimate teammate who embodied everything good about life through her character, spirit and heart. Her family was such a big part of the Mizzou family and our thoughts and prayers go out to them."

"Meggie was a very special person in every sense that you can imagine," said Senior Associate Athletic Director Sarah Reesman. "She was a highly-recognized leader on campus, and was such a vital and valuable part of our soccer family. She had such a bright outlook on life and was going to do great things after she finished up her graduate work here at Mizzou. Our prayers are with Meggie's family, friends and teammates as we all deal with her loss."

A native of Des Moines, Iowa, Malm played for the Tigers from 2003-06. Over her four year career, Malm played in 74 games with 63 starts and tallied four career points mainly as a defender.

While at Missouri, Malm was a member of Mystical Seven, a society that taps seven outstanding seniors based on good deeds, selfless leadership and service to the campus and community. She graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering in May 2007 and was working toward an MBA at Mizzou.

Although official plans are not yet finalized, Missouri will honor Malm in some capacity during tonight's soccer game against Cal-Berkeley at 6:30 p.m. at Walton Stadium.
