LINCOLN, Neb.--The Missouri track and field teams took eighth place on both the men's and women's sides at the Big 12 Championships that concluded Sunday in Lincoln, Neb. Among the larger highlights of the day, junior Shernelle Nicholls came within a centimeter of winning the women's shot put, throwing to a school record of 56 feet, 3 inches (17.14m). Additionally, junior Hedvig Glomsroed set a new school record in the women's long jump, marking 41-8½.

Nicholls (St. Andrews Parrish, Barbados) threw her best of the day in the shot on her third attempt, coming just a quarter-of-an-inch from Texas' Michelle Carter who threw 56-3¼ (17.15m) in the same round. Carter, now a three-time Big 12 Champ and the 2006 NCAA Indoor Champ nearly fell to the Tiger. Nicholls mark extended her career best and Barbados national record by nearly 15 inches and was nearly nine inches over Janae Strickland's school record that was set at the 2004 Big 12 Championships.

"I have really felt good in the last few weeks at practice and at the gym," said Nicholls. "I knew a PR was going to come soon, but I didn't know it was going to be good enough for a school record. The weather was nearly perfect, I was able to warmup good and my body seemed to be near its peak."

Nicholls moves again into the NCAA's top five with the mark and will likely enter the NCAA Regional Championships, hosted by Mizzou in two weeks, as the No. 1 seed.

The Tiger men led the conference is gaining 30 points from throwing events this weekend, including 14 in the men's shot put on Sunday via second-, fourth-, and eighth-place finishes.

Junioir Nate Englin (Shoreview, Minn.) took second in the shot, throwing 56 feet, 10¾ inches (17.34m) to score in a Big 12 Championship for the sixth time. Englin repeated his finish from the Big 12 Indoor Championships earlier this year an improved upon a sixth-place 2006 outdoor conference finish. Englin has already secured an NCAA-regional qualifying mark in the event for the third-straight year. Oklahoma's Kevin Bookout won at 62-8½.

Senior Bill Hobson (Katy, Texas) was fourth in the shot, adding to his NCAA-regional qualifying mark with a 56-4¾ (17.19m) marking. Hobson ends his Tiger career by scoring in five of eight conference shot-put competitions. Hobson, who moved from sixth to fourth on his final attempt, will move on to his fourth-consecutive NCAA regional in two weeks. Frosh Andy Oaker (Steelville, Mo.) was eighth with a 53-3¾ (16.25m) toss to earn his first All-Big 12 honor.

The Tigers once again enjoyed success in the 800-meter runs. On the women's side, junior Trisa Nickoley (Tecumseh, Kan.) took runner-up to Baylor freshman Nichole Jones (2:05.89), running in 2:08.12. Nickoley is now a 12-time Big 12 scorer.

Senior Marcus Mayes took second place in the men's 800, running 1:48.76. Texas Tech senior Zach Glavash used a homestretch kick to win in 1:47.99.

Freshman Brian Hancock (Monroe City, Mo.) scored in his second conference pole vault competition, placing seventh with a season's best of 16-10¾ (5.15m).

Redshirt frosh Dan Hedgecock (St. Louis, Mo.) earned his second All-Big 12 honor despite very hot and windy conditions with a fifth-place finish in the 5000-meter run, clocking 14:38.83.

In the women's 5000, seniors Kristin Hansen and Valerie Moll took sixth and seventh, respectively. Hansen clocked 17:33.71 while Moll ran in 17:45.78.

Hedvig Glomsroed broke Lindsey Miller's school record in the women's triple jump with a leap of 41-8½ (12.71m). Glomsroed qualified for the finals via three-way tie for eighth place, but was passed in the finals to place ninth.

On the greatest breakthroughs of the day for Mizzou was sophomore Jason Miller (Stafford, Va.) in the men's triple jump. Miller added an 15 inches to his personal best in jumping 49-4¼ (15.04m) to gain his first NCAA-regional qualifying mark of the year. Miller leapt to the distance despite a 1.2 meters-per-second (3 mph) head wind. In a very difficult field, Miller was just one spot from qualifying for the finals in placing ninth.

The 4x100-meter relay teams on both the men's and women's side scored for the Tigers. The Tiger men was seventh with Andrew Hoskins, Jerron Forte, Austin Kerkhover, and Greg Bracey all earning All-Big 12 honors in clocking 41.28. The women's team included Glomsroed, Lana Mims, JaNay Woolridge, and Kaela Rorvig, and place eighth in clocking 47.56.

The men's 4x400-meter relay was eighth with Jerron Forte, Jimmie Jones, Marcus Mayes, and Nick Adcock earning additional All-Big 12 honors. The quartet crossed the line in 3:10.71.

The meet will arguable go down historically as one of the best conference meets in NCAA history as many events contained fields that would envy an NCAA Championship. Over 320 NCAA-regional qualifying marks were made in the meet with an average of eight marks per event.

Oklahoma claimed the men's title with 110½ points. Texas A&M took the women's title with 140.

Mizzou will next host the NCAA Mideast Regional Championships, May 25 and 26 in Columbia. Nearly 25 Tigers have qualified for the event and will compete for bids to the NCAA Championships.
