LINCOLN, Neb.--The University of Missouri track and field teams completed day two of three at the Big 12 Championships in Lincoln, Neb., on Saturday. Mizzou placed three athletes from the men's and women's 800-meter run in tomorrow's track finals while picking up several points in the field. The Tiger women are currently tied for fifth while the Mizzou men are in fourth.
Senior Bjorn Sommerfeldt finished third in the men's decathlon with 7,283 points, improving upon his NCAA-provisional mark. Sommerfeldt has taken the bronze in each of the last three years and will end his Tiger career as a seven-time Big 12 scorer. Sommerfeldt's score places him just outside of the NCAA's top 10 among scores posted before this weekend and will have to wait until May 29 to wait for word on a third-consecutive at-large selection to the NCAA Championships.
Freshman Nick Adcock (Kansas City, Mo.) earned his first All-Big 12 honor in the decathlon, finishing eighth with a 7,078 score, a 380-point personal best. With a score over 7,000 for the first time in his career, Adcock earned an NCAA-provisional qualifying mark that, among marks entering the weekend, places him in the NCAA's top 25. In addition, Adcock becomes the second-best all-time freshman at Mizzou in the event and will wait with Sommerfeldt about a possible at-large bid.
Adcock claimed personal bests in the final three events of the day, adding a foot to his PR in the pole vault (13-3½), 12 feet to his best in the pole vault (185-0), and taking off two seconds off his PR in the 1500 (4:42.05).
The Big 12's decathlon field was undoubtedly the best in the country with the top nine competitors scoring over 7,000 points. Only 32 from around the nation has scored over 7,000 points entering the weekend. Neil Hines of Iowa State won his first title in the event, winning with 7,508 points.
In the women's heptathlon, junior Kaela Rorvig (Columbia, Mo. / Hickman HS) finished in fifth with 5,022 points, a 108-point improvement over previous personal best. Rorvig long jumped 17-11¾, threw the javelin 88-4 and ran the final race, the 800 meters in 2:21.39. Freshman Lindsey Boldt was ninth at 4,692 and frosh Lauren Begany was 10th with 4,546. Nebraska's Ashley Selig won with 5,726 points.
Rorvig became Mizzou's 10th person all-time to score over 5,000 points in the heptathlon. The only other Big 12 school to match the feat is Nebraska who has placed at least 12 over the mark in their history.
In the women's hammer throw, sophomore Elisha Hunt placed fourth with a throw of 186-5 (56.81m) to extend her NCAA-regional qualifying mark in adding eight foot to her personal best to climb into Mizzou's all-time top five in the event. Hunt, after redshirting last year do to injury, improved upon her 14th place finish in 2005. Junior Elizabeth Robe was sixth with a new personal best throw of 180-4 (54.96m). Shernelle Nicholls was ninth with a 161-9 mark and Sara Burbee was 11th at 153-11.
On the men's side, junior Jason Morris was third in the hammer with a 210-7 (64.18m) marking. Bobby Musil was fourth at 205-7. Musil also finished fourth in the discus yesterday.
In the track preliminaries, seniors Marcus Mayes and Jimmie Jones qualified for Sunday's finals in the men's 800. Mayes won his heat in 1:48.88 and Jones won his heat in 1:49.61. Jones earned an NCAA-regional qualifying time for the first time this season with the run. Freshman Steve Headrick (Oakville, Mo.) held his own in the tough field and clocked a 1.5-second personal best in clocking 1:51.96 to finish 11th overall.
Junior Trisa Nickoley qualified for the finals in the women's 800, winning her heat in 2:08.75. Sophomore Ellen Ries ran a personal best of 2:09.90, just a tenth of a second off NCAA-regional qualifying in placing 11th.
Senior Greg Bracey clocked 10.45 in the men's 100-meter dash preliminary to earn his first NCAA-regional qualifying mark in the event to place 11th overall. Bracey also qualified for the regional for the first time this year in the 200, clocking 21.12, a new personal best.
In the 100-meter hurdles, sophomore JaNay Woolridge placed 10th with a 14.09 clocking, a new personal best. Frosh Jerron Forte (Kansas City, Mo.) ran a collegiate personal best of 48.18 in the 400 prelims. Sophomore Tim Cornell (Columbia, Mo. / Hickman HS) ran 3:50.14 in the 1500-meter heats to place 10th overall.
The Tiger women stand in a tie with Kansas State in fifth with 22 points after seven of 22 events. Nebraska leads with 74. Mizzou's men are in fourth place with 25 points and Kansas leads with 37 points through five of 22 events scored.
