LINCOLN, Neb.--The Missouri track and field teams completed competition at the first day of the Big 12 Championships on Friday in Lincoln, Neb. The Tigers scored in each event entered so far in the meet, and decathletes Bjorn Sommerfeldt and Nick Adcock and heptathletes Kaela Rorvig, Lauren Begany, and Lindsey Boldt had posted solid day one scores in their events.
Senior Bobby Musil (DuBois, Neb.) took fourth in the men's discus with a season's best toss of 173 feet, 9 inches (52.96m). Musil has now scored at the Big 12 meet in the event in each of the last three years, becoming a five-time All-Big 12 performer in the process. Musil's toss also gained him his first NCAA-regional qualifying mark in the event, and he will make his fourth appearance in the regional for the discus in two weeks. Musil qualified earlier in the year
with the hammer throw and will compete in that event at the conference meet tomorrow.
In the women's discus, senior Jamie Wynn (Lee's Summit, Mo.) placed sixth with a personal-best toss of 162-10 (49.64m), extending her NCAA-regional qualifying mark. Wynn has now scored twice with the discus in a Big 12 meet. Junior Shernelle Nicholls took eighth with a 159-2 (48.52m).
Senior Valerie Moll took third in the women's 10,000-meter run during the very warm late afternoon, clocking 36:15.83. To end her conference career, Moll earned her 10th Big 12 scoring honor. Iowa State frosh Lisa Koll won in 35:36.60.
Sophomore Garett Jeffries (Clarkson Valley, Mo.) took seventh in the men's 10,000-meter run, clocking 31:00.74. Jeffries won his first All-Big 12 honor with the placing.
After day one of the men's decathlon, the race to the Big 12 crown is as close as ever. Freshman Nick Adcock (Kansas City, Mo.) stands in third place after an impressive day one, scoring 3,835, a 175-point day-one personal best. Adcock threw the shot 42-9¾ to improve his all-time best by a foot. After jumping 6-7 in the high jump, Adcock clocked 48.88 in the 400, shaving a half second off his own Mizzou school record for a decathlon 400.
Senior Bjorn Sommerfeldt is in fourth with 3,790 points with his statistically best day to come tomorrow. Sommerfeldt jumped to 23-7 in the long jump for a four-inch personal best and improved drastically in the shot, throwing 47-11 (14.60m), the field's best, for a 26-inch personal best. Nebraska's Skyler Reising is leading with a 4,006-point day one. Iowa State's Neil Hines is in second with 3,837.
The Tigers have three in the scoring hunt after day one of the women's heptathlon. Junior Kaela Rorvig (Columbia, Mo. / Hickman HS) stands solidly in fifth place, 180 points ahead of sixth, with 3,104 points, a 160-point day one personal best, scoring on personal bests in three of the four events. Rorvig started the day with a 14.18 clocking in the 100-meter hurdles, shaving one-tenth of a second off her previous best. In the high jump, Rorvig cleared 5-1¾ (1.57m), an inch above old best. In the shot, Rorvig came near her all-time best with a toss of 33-9¼ (10.29m). The biggest improvement came in the 200-meter dash. With a 24.84 time, Rorvig shaved a full second from her all-time best in the event to propel her to the impressive day-one score. With the long jump, javelin, and 800-meter run remaining, Rorvig placed herself just 60 points from third place.
Freshman Lauren Begany (St. Louis, Mo.) sits in sixth place with 2,924 points. Begany had solid marks all-around with a 14.68 time in the 100-meter hurdles, a throw of 32-1 in the shot, and a 26.09 clocking in the 200. Begany scored a tied-personal best in the high jump with a 5-3 clearance.
