AMES, Iowa--The University of Missouri Track and Field team completed the second day of competition at the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa, on Friday. Over 80 schools from NCAA Division I competition, comprising of over 2,600 athletes are in attendance in the nation's indoor "mega-meet". On Friday, 14th-nationally-ranked Elisha Hunt jumped into the nation's top 10 with a school record toss in the women's weight throw.
Hunt (Linn, Mo.), a junior, finished fourth in the women's weight throw among a stacked field that included five from the NCAA's top-25. Hunt's final throw of 65 feet, 4 inches (19.92m) broke her own school record, improving her previous personal best by 16 inches and lands her in the NCAA's top-10 for the year. Hunt initially broke her school record on her first of six attempts, marking a 64-7¾ (19.70m) toss.
Adcock and Hunter Give the Heptathlon a Spin
Freshman Nick Adcock (Kansas City, Mo.) and sophomore Daniel Hunter (Hallsville, Mo.) competed in the first heptathlon competitions of their respective careers on Thursday and Friday. Adcock placed seventh, scoring 4,993 points and landing sixth on Mizzou's all-time list in the event. Hunter was ninth with 4,666 points.
But, this competition was not necessarily about scoring the most points, it was about learning how to be a decathlete (or during the indoor season, how to be a heptathlete). Over the span of the two days, Adcock and Hunter pole-vaulted, ran a 60-meter dash, and ran a 1000-meter run for the first time ever. Adcock's athleticism showed during the pole vault. Only having cleared 10-6 during a practice run back in Columbia this week, Adcock entered at a meager 8-6. Adcock went on to clear bar, after bar, on the first attempt even, on 10-consecutive heights, reaching 10-9½, then 11-1½, then 11-5¼, then 11-9¼, then 12-1¼.
Teammates Hans Uldal and Bjorn Sommerfeldt will compete at the Big 12 Indoor Championships for their first heptathlon competition of the season.
A full recap from all the weekend's action at the Iowa State Classic will be discussed tomorrow as a majority of events progress tomorrow.
