Columbia, Mo. -The Missouri softball team (4-3) won game two of the double header against in-state opponent UMKC (0-2) 11-0 in the Dan Devine Pavilion. Sophomore Megan Dennis (Liberty, Mo.) registered her first win of the season (1-1), pitching five innings and allowing four hits while striking out five. The Tigers needed only four hits to score their 11 runs as the UMKC pitching staff walked in five Missouri batters.
Sophomore Sara Simons (Kearney, Mo.) hit her first home run of the season in the bottom of the second inning, breaking a scoreless tie. The Tigers added another run in the second when senior Alli Kennewell (Eden Prairie, Minn.) stole home with sophomore Andee Allen (Barnhart, Mo.) at bat.
UMKC's pitching staff walked in five runs for the Tigers, as the bases were loaded in a majority of the bottom third and fourth innings. Missouri scored six of its runs in its last offensive appearance, with four runs walked in by Kangaroo pitchers Alicia Baker and Cori Mead. Dennis pitched her best inning in the fourth as she needed only four pitches to get through the UMKC order.
With the sweep, the Tigers improve to 44-2 all time against UMKC, with 21 of those games falling under the eight-run rule. Redshirt freshman Katie Milles (St. Louis, Mo.) had the best game of her career earning two RBI's for the Tigers.
Missouri will be back in action this weekend as they head to Stanford, Calif., for the Stanford Invitational. The Tigers will square off against Pacific, No. 12 Stanford and Santa Clara.
The Tigers return home Feb. 21 to play St. Louis University at 7 p.m.
