
Mizzou Falls to Nebraska in Extra Innings

COLUMBIA, Mo. - - Nebraska scored three runs in the top of the 13th inning to defeat Mizzou 5-2 in what was the longest game for the Tigers since going 15 innings against Oklahoma State last April. The third and final game of the series is Sunday at Taylor Stadium.
Missouri (16-13, 6-5 Big 12) is 1-1 on the season in extra-inning games.
With the score tied at two, the Cornhuskers scored three times in the 13th inning to take a 2-0 lead in the series. Nebraska's Luke Gorsett doubled with two on to clear the bases and give the Huskers the lead. Jeff Christy then connected on a two-out single to drive in Gorsett.
After Brandon Buckman homered in the top of the fourth inning, MU senior Zane Taylor answered with his second home run of the season to tie the game at one.
The Huskers retook the lead with a run in the fifth, as Bryce Nimmo singled to drive in Jake Opitz.
Nebraska (23-5, 6-2 Big 12) continued to lead 2-1 in the eighth, when Mizzou rallied with two outs to tie the game. After the first two Tigers to the plate in the eighth were retired, sophomore Evan Frey and freshman Ryan Lollis each singled. Then a Nebraska error on a ground ball hit by sophomore Brock Bond allowed Frey to cross the plate with the tying run.
Neither team scored in the ninth to send the game to extra inning, where in the 13th, Nebraska finally broke through with the three runs to take the victory.
Junior Max Scherzer pitched 4.2 innings, allowing one run on two hits and striking out three. Freshman David Cales went the longest of the four Tiger relief pitchers, turning in a career-long outing with 4.1 innings pitched. He allowed just one run on three hits and struck out three.
