Lawrence, Kan. - The Missouri softball (20-20, 4-6) team suffered its third straight loss of the week, 5-1, to Midwest Border Showdown opponent Kansas (24-20, 5-5) at Arrocha Ballpark. Redshirt sophomore Micaela Minner (Sanger, Texas) moved to No. 1 in the Missouri career home run record book, with her seventh inning leadoff shot over the centerfield fence, it was one of only two Tiger hits on the evening. The loss gives Kansas a seven point lead in the annual Border Showdown, 19-12.
Scoreless through four-and-a-half innings, the Jayhawks put up four runs in the fifth frame on a 1-1, grand slam by pitcher Serena Settlemier. Crushed over the fence in left center, the bases were cleared and sophomore pitcher Jen Bruck (St. Peters, Mo.) was able to close down the inning with a groundout to shortstop freshman Andee Allen (Barnhart, Mo.).
Allen came up with Missouri's first hit of the game, a leadoff single down the right field line. After swiping her fifth bag of the season, Allen was stranded on second on three straight outs.
Kansas scored its fifth run of the game on a two-out single by leadoff batter Val Chapple. On the day, Bruck gave up five run, four earned, on 10 hits, but managed to strikeout two batters in six innings of work.
After a first inning fly ball and fourth inning pop ball forced her back to the dugout, Minner went yard for the ninth time of the season on the first pitch by Settlemier. Minner now stands tied with former Tiger great Mary Babb (1994-97) with 26th career home runs.
The Tigers will travel to College Station, Texas for their next two-game Big 12 series against #15 Texas A&M. Game one is set for Saturday, April 22 at 2 p.m. (CST) with the first pitch of game two slated for noon, Sunday, April 23.
