Despite out-hitting Washington State on Sunday, No. 10 Mizzou fell to WSU by a score of 9-3 in the final game of the Buccaneer Classic in Charleston, S.C. A six-run fourth inning for the Cougars helped propel them to the win, sending the Tigers to a 2-2 record after the first weekend of the 2006 season.
The Tigers scored early in Sunday's game, as senior Trevor Helms led off the game with a double into the right-centerfield gap and scored on a single by the second batter of the game, senior Zane Taylor.
The lead was short-lived as Washington State scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, getting an RBI double from Jay Miller, that scored Travis Coulter who led off the inning with a walk. Miller was driven in on an RBI single from the Cougars' Jared Prince.
Mizzou starter, junior Stephan Holst, retired six-straight batters in the second and third innings, including striking out the side in the second. However, WSU got the offense going in the bottom of the fourth inning, putting up six runs in the inning to take an 8-1 lead. The Cougars had three RBI doubles in the fourth and were aided by two walks and a pair of hit batters, leading to the six runs. They added another run in the bottom of the fifth inning to extend the lead to eight.
The Tigers stranded two runners on base in the second inning and had the first two batters in the third inning draw walks, but were unable to get any runs across the plate. They finally were able to get back on the board, scoring two runs in the eighth inning as sophomore Jacob Priday led off with a double to right. Priday then scored on a triple down the right field line by junior Hunter Mense.
Next up for the Tigers is a trip to Monroe, La. for a three-game series with Louisiana-Monroe. The series will get underway at 6:30 p.m. on Friday and continues with games at 3 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday. All Tiger Baseball games can be heard on KTGR 1580-AM in Columbia and on the Web at KTGR.com.
