No. 10 Mizzou recorded its first win of 2006, with a 12-4 victory over Charleston Southern at the Buccaneer Classic in Charleston, S.C. Junior lefthander Nathan Culp did not allow an earned run in six innings of work to pick up the victory in his first outing of the year.
After a scoreless first two innings, Missouri (1-1) batted around in the top of the third inning, scoring six runs after the first two batters to the plate in the inning were retired. All six runs in the inning were unearned after a two-out error by the CSU shortstop allowed the inning to continue.
The big hit in the inning came off the bat of senior J.C. Field, who connected on a three-run home run over the right field wall. It was the first career homer for Field, who also added four walks in the game.
Senior Zane Taylor added a pair of RBIs, with a two-run single earlier in the sixth inning. Taylor was one of three Tigers to record two hits on Friday against CSU.
Missouri added two more runs in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI single by junior John McKee, his second RBI hit of the game, and a sacrifice fly by senior Derek Chambers. McKee finished with three runs batted in for the game.
All four of the Buccaneer runs were unearned runs and came in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Tigers committed three errors in the sixth leading to the four-run inning. They had five errors in the game.
The lead returned to eight when the Tigers added four runs in the top of the ninth inning.
Culp, who opened the game by striking out the first batter on three pitches and threw five-straight strikes to start the game, allowed four runs, all of which were unearned, in six innings. He struck out five and did not walk a batter.
Two freshmen, David Cales and Brant Combs, were solid out of the bullpen. Cales struck out three of the five batters he faced and retired all five in his second appearance of the season. Combs, a redshirt freshman, finished the game, pitching the ninth inning.
On Saturday, the Tigers will take on Kennesaw State at 2:30 p.m. EST (1:30 p.m. CST) in day three of the Buccaneer Classic with freshman Aaron Crow scheduled to make his first start on the mound for Mizzou. Saturday's game can be heard on KTGR 1580-AM in Columbia and on the web at KTGR.com.
