COLUMBIA, Mo. - After three years as an assistant coach with the Missouri soccer program, Amy Edwards has been promoted to associate head coach, Tiger Head Coach Bryan Blitz announced on Wednesday.
"We are extremely excited to promote Amy to associate head coach," said Blitz. "She has been an invaluable member of the program since she arrived in 2004. She is an asset to the team as a coach, recruiter and person and we know she will continue to excel in her new role at Missouri."
"I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to take a more active role in the future of the University of Missouri soccer program," said Edwards. "I have never been more excited about Mizzou soccer than I am right now. I want to thank Coach Blitz, Mike Alden and Sarah Reesman for their belief in me and for their support of Missouri soccer."
Edwards came to Missouri from Fresno State, where she was an assistant during the 2003 season. Prior to her time with the Bulldogs, she was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Notre Dame from 1999-2002. During her tenure with the Irish, Notre Dame compiled a 74-16-2 record, made two college cup appearances and claimed three consecutive Big East Conference titles from 1999-2001. During those seasons, Edwards helped coach five All-American athletes, five NCAA all-tournament players, 14 regional All-Americans and 22 All-Big East Conference players. In addition, Edwards coached Anne Makinen, winner of the 2000 Hermann Trophy as the nation's finest collegiate soccer player, during her time at Notre Dame.
Jumpstarting her collegiate coaching career, Edwards spent three seasons as an assistant at Tulsa before being named head coach of the Golden Hurricanes in 1995. Under her direction, the Golden Hurricanes recorded a 47-25-6 record and had six athletes named to the Regional All-America team from 1995-1998. In three years of Western Athletic Conference competition, Edwards coached 14 all-conference players, 12 all-conference academic recipients and five all-tournament athletes.
A four-year starter at Tulsa from 1988-92, Edwards served as team captain all four years. She earned regional All-America honors as a senior in 1991.
Edwards earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Tulsa in 1992. The Broken Arrow, Okla., native then went on to earn a master's degree in education from Tulsa in 1997. She is pursuing a second master's degree at Mizzou.
