
Mizzou Football Hands Out Honors for 2006

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- - A day after a 42-17 win over rival Kansas, the Mizzou football team held its annual Awards Banquet on Sunday at the Holiday Inn Executive Center, handing out 21 awards highlighted by the Team Most Valuable Player Award, which went to senior defensive end Brian Smith. Smith also earned the J. Ed "Brick" Travis Interior Lineman Award.
The Missouri MO Award, which recognizes sportsmanship, enthusiasm and team spirit, was presented to senior David Overstreet, who also received the Safety of the Year honor.
Senior Dedrick Harrington was awarded the Don Faurot Most Inspirational Player Award and was also named the Curtis Jones Champion of the Year. Sophomore Ziggy Hood took home the Rigman Outstanding Underclassman Leadership Award.
The St. Louis Metro Player of the Year was given to junior Will Franklin, while the Kansas City Metro Player of the Year went to junior Martin Rucker.
Senior Brad Ekwerekwu earned a pair of honors, taking home the Strength & Conditioning Tiger Performance Athlete of the Year and the Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards. Sophomore TE Chase Coffman earned the Breakthrough Construction Hammer Award (most big hits).
Coffman and Franklin were also selected as co-Receivers of the Year. Other award recipients included junior Darnell Terrell (Cornerback of the Year), senior Marcus Bacon (Linebacker of the Year), senior Xzavie Jackson (Defensive Lineman of the Year), senior Joel Clinger (Offensive Lineman of the Year), sophomore Chase Daniel (Offensive Back of the Year), freshman Sean Weatherspoon (Special Teams Player of the Year), freshman Jared Perry (Freshman of the Year) and sophomore Jeff Wolfert (Walk-On Player of the Year).
