Big 12 Officials' Statement (postgame quotes)
Referee Drew George and replay official John Laurie addressed questions on the reversal of a third-quarter Missouri touchdown and the circumstances surrounding the play in question.
Q: In the reversal of Missouri's touchdown in the third quarter, what were the circumstances that led to an initial approval of the score and the overturning of that decision?
DG: I misunderstood the initial penalty as being on "8-White"; therefore, I announced the touchdown as good and then the calling-official came in and said it was on "8-Black". At that time, we were buzzed.
JL: I kept looking at the screen and it was obvious to me that Missouri had fouled prior to the touchdown and Rule 12 allows me on scoring plays to review scoring plays. It was obvious to me, that around the 30-yard line was where the black-shirt fouled. So, that was the reason I buzzed him over. I didn't buzz him over because I thought there was a foul or that there was an offset, I brought him over because the foul occurred before the touchdown.
DG: And, when I got there, I announced to John that I had misunderstood the penalty, there was no touchdown, we were going to call the touchdown back and we are going back to the previous spot to penalize for unnecessary roughness.
JL: And, then I said, "If you have offsetting fouls, I'm out of it."
DG: And, when I was telling John about the initial penalty, that's when I was told there was another foul on "28-White", which was also a live-ball foul. At that point, that's when I told John, "We have offsetting fouls", and he said "Yes, we do," and I said "You're out of it." And that's when I turned and made the announcement that we have a unnecessary roughness on "28-White" and "8-Black", they were live-ball fouls, they offset, and they replay the down.
JL: The perception may have been that replay caused the second foul. That was not the case.
Q: Per Rule 12 in NCAA Football Rules, under what circumstance was the above play reviewed?
JL: Because it was a scoring play. Had he been stopped at the "1", I would have stayed out of it.
Q: What was the nature of the offsetting penalties? Where they live or dead ball?
DG: They were both live-ball fouls, unnecessary roughness fouls.
Q: Did the impetus of the review come from the booth or the field?
DG: There was no review. I told John that we had offsetting penalties and that he was out of it, and he replied, "I know."

Gary Pinkel | MU Players | Mark Mangino | KU Players
Opening statement:
"I'm certainly proud of my football team and my coaches. With the adversity we had a week ago and that experience we were able to come back and battle today. It got a little close in the second half and I was very proud of them (the team). There were a lot of guys that made a lot of plays in a game like this. Kansas was coming into this game very hot. They had been playing really well and they're a very good football team. I'm thrilled for my players and for my coaches and we're going to find out what bowl we're going to go to. I'm looking forward to getting ready for that."
On coming back from last week's tough loss:
"For our players they were pretty insulated from that. I'd like to thank those Missouri fans that supported my players when they had a game taken away from them last week"
On Missouri kicker Jeff Wolfert's performance:
"He just comes in and makes kicks. He's been huge. He's very important; you just count on the guy."
On being emotional during the senior announcements before the game:
"That's hard. I don't know why we do that. I think my coaches think that everyone wants to see me as a human being so they see me sitting there crying for five straight minutes and think, `Oh, he's a nice guy.'"
On this year's seniors:
I'm really appreciative of our seniors and it's just really emotional. Some of those guys came here when there were no bowl games; there was nothing. They were just saying, `We believe in your staff,' and Dedrick Harrington's one of them, Overstreet's one of them. Those guy's just came in when we hadn't done anything yet...those seniors, especially the ones that have invested five years of their life here, I'm very happy for them, too."
MU Players | Gary Pinkel | Mark Mangino | KU Players
Senior Linebacker Dedrick Harrington
On today's game:
"That was a fun day for me. I don't think I really had to get emotional, because I had so much fun out there."
"It felt like I was going to [get emotional] but I was so focused on the game. What we'd done against Kansas the last two years, I was unhappy with, so I definitely wanted to win today."
Kicker Jeff Wolfert
On sending the seniors out with a win:
"We all love our seniors, and we're glad that we sent them out with a big victory that they will remember forever."
Quarterback Chase Daniel
On the senior day win:
"It's huge, a lot of them [the seniors] are from Kansas City, and it's huge for them. It's huge for this team to beat them. We didn't beat them in three years, and we didn't beat K-State in 12 years, well we got both of those done this year."
On Missouri's offense today:
"You could see where we were really aggressive today. We ran three reverses, a reverse pass, [we were] throwing the ball down the field left and right, and that's we're the best at."
Tight End Martin Rucker
On his choice for a bowl game:
"I just want to go to the best one."
On snapping the losing streak to Kansas:
"We weren't going to let them beat us again. Especially coming in here, there was no way. We're sending the seniors out on a good note."
On the team regaining their early season form:
"I don't know where it was the last few weeks, but I'm glad it came back, out here."
On his 7-catch performance:
"It felt great, I was excited to go back on the field every time, I didn't want to come off, and I just wanted to keep making plays."
Kansas Head Coach Mark Mangino | KU Players | Gary Pinkel | MU Players
Opening Statement:
"I want to congratulate Missouri for a good win, they outplayed us in nearly every facet of the game. They out coached us and outplayed us, it was clean sweep for them."
On Penalties:
"We can't make those kind of mistakes. You have to be smarter, especially when all you need to do is make a wall on that punt."
On Chase Daniel:
"I think that he is really good. He passes the ball very well, and very accurately. He's a tough son of a gun as well; he takes hits and keeps getting up. He also has deceptive speed."
On Making a Bowl Game:
"This is the only game that we have not been able to close the gap on all season. We played Nebraska to overtime on their field and played (Texas) A&M very well. We just weren't in this one at the end."
KU Players | Mark Mangino | Gary Pinkel | MU Players
Senior OL David Ochoa
"My hats off to (Missouri), they played really hard. It's disappointing that we lost but no one has his head down. Maybe when it's all said and done we'll look back at it but right now a loss is a loss. We did some things today that are uncharacteristic for us. We made some penalties and on offense we did some things we usually don't do. Basically, Missouri played really well."
Sophomore WR Marcus Herford
"(Missouri) blocked well out there, that was the main thing. I would have wanted the seniors to beat Missouri going out. Unfortunately that didn't happen. We played well but came out short. I think we deserve to make a bowl because we worked hard every game, this was the only game we came out flat."
Freshman QB Kerry Meier
"I think the (bowl situation) is still up in the air. You sit there and think, `wow, the season could be over.' Hopefully everything goes the way we want. It was critical we came out to a fast start to get things going but we came out flat. Hats off to Missouri. I think they played one of their best games this season."
Senior RB Jon Cornish
"I didn't really care (about the single-season rushing record) at the time. Our statistics show that the run was very successful today. It wasn't difficult to get the running game going at all because we were running all over them the whole game."
