The Missouri women's swimming and diving team will host arch-rival Kansas in the fifth event of the 2006-07 Border Showdown, presented by Midwest Ford Dealers, on Friday at 6:00 p.m. at the Mizzou Aquatic Center.
Missouri (0-1) is looking to avenge last year's 175-125 setback in Lawrence, while Kansas (2-0) is attempting to open the young season with their third-consecutive dual-meet victory.
"Looking at it on paper it will be tough to call," MU coach Brian Hoffer said. "We will have to swim a very good meet. Now, I like that we are at home as we are very good in our pool."
Some of the races that appear to be too close to call, as far as season best times go, include both sprint freestyles as Tiger senior Shannon Hogan and Jayhawk transfer Maria Mayrovich have swam near 24.00 in the 50 free and 51.50 in the 100 free.
In addition to Hogan, top Mizzou competitors to keep an eye on include junior Jill Bastien, freshman Colleen Gordon and sophomores Jill Granger and Lori Halvorson. Bastien is an Olympic Trials qualifier in the breaststroke who captured the 100-yard competition in her last home dual meet. Gordon has shown the ability to contribute in a number of events, with her 200 free and 100 fly times already first on the squad this year. Granger is the MU record-holder in the 500 and 1000 freestyle and is right at last year's times at the same point in the season. Halvorson is another multi-record holder at Mizzou, as she set the standard in the 200 free and IM a year ago.
Other Kansas swimmers to watch include Danielle Hermann in the breaststroke and Ashleigh Leidigh in the butterfly. Hermann posted NCAA "B" cut times in both the 100 and 200 breast a year ago and was undefeated in the 100 in every dual meet as a freshman. Leidigh, who competed in the 100 and 200 fly at the NCAA Championships, won three races against the Tigers last season.
Last year's KU victory snapped a five-meet winning streak by Mizzou. The Jayhawks lead the all-time series, 18-5.
Missouri won the first of two regular-season volleyball matches on Oct. 4 before Kansas claimed the lone soccer match on Oct. 15. Friday morning will see two points decided at the Big 12 Cross Country Championships in Lawrence. KU currently leads 3.0-1.5.
