Columbia, Mo. -
University of Missouri sophomore tight end Chase Coffman (Peculiar, Mo.) has been named the John Mackey Tight End of the Week, as announced today by the Nassau County Sports Commission.
Coffman was instrumental in MU's Homecoming win last Saturday over Kansas State that broke a 13-game losing streak for the Tigers against the Wildcats. Coffman had six catches for a season-high 75 yards and one touchdown as Mizzou claimed a 41-21 win to improve to 7-1 for the first time since 1969.
Coffman leads all Big 12 tight ends with his season totals of 35 catches, 353 yards and 5 touchdowns, and the pre-season Mackey Award candidate ranks second on the Tiger squad in each category. This marks the first national weekly award for Coffman, who is just one touchdown shy of the single-season MU tight end record of six, held by former All-American Kellen Winslow (1978) and Dwayne Blakley (1999).
Coffman is the second Tiger standout tight end to win the weekly award this season, as he joins teammate Martin Rucker (Jr. - St. Joseph, Mo.), who won the award after his performance against Colorado on Sept. 30th. Both Coffman and Rucker were pre-season candidates for the Mackey Award.
The John Mackey Award is given annually by the Nassau County Sports Commission to the nation's top collegiate tight end. The 2006 recipient will be named in mid-December and presented at the annual awards dinner on April 30, 2007.
