Missouri vs. Kansas
Norm Stewart Court at Mizzou Arena
January 16, 2005 - 6 p.m.
Game Notes
This game marked the first overtime tilt between Mizzou and Kansas since Feb. 4, 1997, when the Tigers took a 96-94 win in Columbia. It was also the second overtime game in the history of Mizzou Arena - the other took place on Feb. 12, 2005 against Oklahoma (a 68-65 Mizzou win).
Tonight's sellout marks only the second time Mizzou Arena has ever been sold out - the other occasion was the Kansas game last season, which the Tigers won, 72-68.
The game featured 10 lead changes in the first half, and 22 overall. There were also 10 ties in the ballgame.
Missouri Team Notes
Mizzou improved its record to 4-4 record in overtime games under Quin Snyder.
Mizzou has now won back-to-back games against the Jayhawks since Jan. 24, 1999 (71-63) and Jan. 22, 2000 (81-59).
The Tigers were down by seven points, 74-67, with 39 seconds remaining in regulation but reeled off a 10-3 run to end the second half and send the game into overtime tied at 77.
Mizzou entered the game second in the Big 12 in scoring offense in conference games with 70.3 points per game, but improved that mark with their 89-point outburst against the Jayhawks.
Down 27-20 with 6:33 to play in the first half, the Tigers went on a 17-5 run, with 15 of the points courtesy of junior guard Thomas Gardner, to take a 37-32 lead into the half.
With the win, the Tigers are now 3-3 on the year when playing in front of crowds larger than 10,000 people.
Missouri Player Notes
Junior guard Thomas Gardner (40) and senior guard Jimmy McKinney (19) combined for 59 of the Tigers' 89 points, which translates into 66.3 percent - including eight of 12 points, or 66.7 percent, in the overtime period.
With his career-high 40 points, junior guard Thomas Gardner became the sixth player in Mizzou history to score 30-plus points against Kansas. His 40 points rank second all-time in school history versus the Jayhawks, behind only the 43 scored by Anthony Peeler in 1991-92. Gardner is also the first Tiger to reach the 30-point mark against Kansas since Melvin Booker had 32 in 1993-94.
Junior guard Thomas Gardner ser careers highs in points (40) and field goals made (13), while tying career highs in field goals attempted (22) and 3-point field goals attempted (14).
Mizzou now owns a 10-3 record when junior guard Thomas Gardner leads the team or shares the team lead in points, but an 0-2 record when he doesn't.
The last time a Mizzou player scored at least 20 points in the first half before junior guard Thomas Gardner did it against Kansas was last season's Big 12 Tournament showdown with Oklahoma, when former Tiger Linas Kleiza pulled off the feat en route to a 33-point day.
Sophomore guard/forward Glen Dandridge earned his third career start, and first of the season, tonight, marking his second career starting honor against Kansas (he started the game in Lawrence last season).
Kansas Team Notes
Kansas was held without a field goal for the final 1:54 of regulation as the Tigers were able to tie the game and send it into overtime.
The 56.5 percent (13-23) that Kansas shot from the floor is the highest first-half accuracy rate by an opponent in the history of Mizzou Arena, but the Jayhawks found themselves on the wrong end of a 37-32 deficit at the half thanks to a 16.7 percent (1-6) effort from beyond the 3-point line and a 41.7 percent (5-12) from the free throw line.
Kansas came into the game off of a loss to Kansas State - their first since the 1993-94 season. Coincidentally, the Jayhawks also dropped both contests to Mizzou that season, 79-67 and 81-74. Mizzou won the first meeting this year, 89-86 in overtime.
Kansas Player Notes
The 22-point effort by freshman guard Mario Chalmers was a career high, marking the second consecutive game he has set a career mark after he scored 20 versus Kansas State.
