COLUMBIA, Mo.--Missouri seniors Serena Ramsey and Amanda Bales earned spots on the 2006 ESPN the Magazine CoSIDA Academic All-America® Cross Country/Track & Field Team as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday. Ramsey was one of 14 in the country to be voted on to the first team while Bales earned a spot on the second-team, earning the Academic All-America award for an unprecedented third year in a row.
Ramsey (Waukesha, Wis.) for the second-consecutive season has been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America first-team. Ramey, a recent graduate from the University of Missouri with a degree in Human Development & Family Services, maintained a perfect 4.0 grade point average in her days as a Tiger. Just recently, at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, Ramsey earned her first All-America honor on the track, placing sixth in the nation in the women's 10,000-meter run, capturing a new school record with a 33:52.59 clocking. In addition, Ramsey was the Big 12's runner-up at both 5000 and 10,000 meters this season. In 2004, Ramsey led the Tiger cross country team to their best finish in 19 years in the NCAA Championships, placing in the top third individually to help Mizzou grab an 12th-place national team finish.
Bales (Bettendorf, Iowa) has been voted as an Academic All-American in an unprecedented fashion, earning a spot on the team in each of the last three years. Bales has maintained a 3.91 GPA while perusing her degree in Physical Therapy. Bales, a 2003 cross country All-American, won her first individual Big 12 title this season, taking the tape in the women's 1500-meter run at the conference outdoor meet. At the 2004 and 2005 Big 12 Indoor Championships, Bales anchored the distance medley relay squads to conference crowns, leading the team to the 2005 NCAA Indoor Championships in the event as well. During her career as Tiger, Bales was a 15-time conference scorer. After earning a medical redshirt for the 2005 cross country season, Bales will return to the Tiger squad for one more season this fall.
The CoSIDA Academic All-America Teams program honors 816 male and female student-athletes annually who have succeeded at the highest level on the playing field and in the classroom. Individuals are selected through voting by CoSIDA, the College Sports Information Directors of America; a 2,000-member organization consisted of sports public relations professionals for colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Division I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports.
