SACRAMENTO, Calif.--This weekend, beginning tomorrow, 12 from the University of Missouri will compete at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, held in Sacramento, Calif., for the second-consecutive year. Seemingly, the Mizzou field is the largest in school history to compete at the NCAA meet. Live television coverage will begin Friday and will continue Saturday on CBS.

Biggest Tiger Field at NCAAs Ever?
Seemingly, Mizzou's 12 participants in the NCAA Championships sets a new school record in entrants to the meet. In 2003, Missouri sent 10 to the national meet, seemingly the old record. That group included Christian Cantwell, Knut Sommerfeldt, Russ Bell, Fiona Asigbee, Janae Strickland, and Timothy Dunne, among others.
Once Again, We Present ... the Decathlon
For the seventh-consecutive year, Missouri will have at least one competitor in the men's decathlon field of 26 at the NCA A Championships. And, for the second year in a row, Tigers Hans Uldal and Bjorn Sommerfeldt both qualified for the highly competitive two-day competition. Uldal, now a four-time All-American placed third at last year's NCAA meet with 7,687 points after a rain-logged day one and is currently second on the NCAA's descending order list this season. Uldal's 8,014 points earlier this year at the Walton Combined Events places him 13th on the World's best list this year. Uldal also was recently named USTFCCCA's Midwest Region's Field Athlete of the Year for his season efforts.
Sommerfeldt placed third at the Big 12 Championships with a personal-best score of 7,337 points and ranks 14th on the NCAA's descending order list. Sommerfeldt also placed ninth at the NCAA Indoor Championships in the heptathlon event.
The story once again will be the athletes of the Big 12 that are among those jockeying for the top spots. Six conference athletes will be among the field and three, including Uldal, ranks in the NCAA's top three. Collegiate-record holder Trey Hardee of Texas scored 8,465 points at the Texas Relays in early-April. Texas opted to have Hardee sit out the decathlon and compete in individual events at the Big 12 Championships. Hardee is the defending champ in the event and has finished in the top five in each of the last three years.
Hardee's teammate, Donovan Kilmartin has the third-best score among the field so far this season, having scored a personal best of 7,897 points at the Texas Relays. Kilmartin, the 2006 Big 12 Champion, placed fourth at last year's NCAA Championships.
Six Tiger Throwers Migrate to Sacramento
A big (literally) part of the Tiger squad of 12 is the six throwers being sent to the NCAA Championships. In the men's hammer throw event alone three Tigers qualified. Jason Morris and Bobby Musil earned automatic births after second- and fifth-place finishes, respectively, at the NCAA Mideast Regional last weekend. Morris, a sophomore, has already broken Mizzou's school record in the event three times this season with his latest coming with a second-place showing at the Drake Relays where he threw 218-11 (66.73m). Musil captured his personal best at the Big 12 Championships, hitting 209-1 (63.72m), for a third-place conference showing. Sophomore Chris Rohr threw 209-2 (63.76m) earlier in the season to earn an at-large bid. Rohr earned All-America honors during the indoor season in the weight throw event.
Just like the men's decathlon, Missouri will have shot putters in the NCAA Championships for the seventh year in a row. Sophomore Nate Englin earned an automatic bid after a second-place finish at the regional meet last weekend. Tiger junior Bill Hobson was the most surprised person at the regional meet last weekend. Hobson's fifth-place showing at the regional earned him an automatic bid to the NCAA meet, and that came as a shocker considering he was ranked 47th in the NCAA entering the regional meet and 11th in the region. Hobson was definitely a benefactor of the regional system.
Sophomore Elisabeth Robe is entered in the women's shot put. Robe will make her first appearance in an NCAA Championship meet.
Running Down A Dream
Three Tiger females ran their way to the NCAA Championships. Four-time All-American Ashley Patten will make her third-consecutive appearance in the NCAA Championships in the 800-meter run. Patten ran a season best of 2:04.98 at the regional meet in the qualifying rounds last weekend, enroute to a first-place come-from-behind-finish in the final.
Big 12 Champ, senior Amanda Bales qualified in the 1500-meter run. Bales won Mizzou's first conference championship in the event since 1985 with her last-second push to the finish line at this year's conference meet. Bales has also qualified in the past for the NCAA Championship at 5000 meters.
Senior Serena Ramsey will make her second appearance at an NCAA Championship. In 2004, Ramsey qualified at 10,000 meters. Ramsey will pass on the 5000 meters after she qualified automatically at the regional meet and instead run the 10k.
Mayes Makes Third Trip to an NCAA Championship
Junior Marcus Mayes will make his third trip to an NCAA Championship. The Big 12 and regional runner-up will be running at his specialty, the 800 meters. Mayes has twice earned All-America honors, in 2005 he ran the 800-meter leg on the Tiger indoor distance medley relay team, and, at this year's indoor NCAA Championships, he earned All-America honors in the 800.
