Columbia, Mo. -
University of Missouri football fans have through the years shown their concern for others by time and again donating generously at various drives aimed at raising funds or supplies to benefit those in need.
Last Saturday, Tiger fans once again answered the call resoundingly when they contributed 5,313 pounds of canned food that was given to the Central Missouri Food Bank in Columbia. Fans were encouraged to come to MU's Black and Gold Spring Football Game last Saturday (April 15), and were admitted to the game with three canned food items, or for the cost of $3.
Additionally, the MU Department of Athletics contributed $2,500 in cash from the day to the Food Bank, continuing its long-standing partnership with the organization.
"For 12 years, the University of Missouri Athletic Department and the football Tigers have been our strongest supporters in the fight against hunger," said Central Missouri Food Bank Executive Director Peggy Kirkpatrick. "Our partnership with Gary Pinkel and Mike Alden has literally raised millions of pounds of food to feed our neighbors in need. Because of that, the Central Missouri Food Bank is truly blessed," she said.
Kirkpatrick estimated that last Saturday's contributions of food and cash will provide the equivalent of almost 41,000 meals for those in need in the area. For more information about the Central Missouri Food Bank, please visit www.centralmofoodbank.org, or call (573) 474-1020.
