COLUMBIA, Mo. - Sophomore quarterback Chase Daniel (Southlake, Texas) was 11-12 passing for 120 yards and two touchdowns and sophomore tight end Chase Coffman (Peculiar, Mo.) caught six passes for 66 yards and a score to lead the Gold team to a 60-43 win Saturday afternoon in the annual Black & Gold spring football game.
In the non-traditional format of the contest, the Gold team represented the Mizzou offense for the entire game, while the Tiger defense played as the black squad. The scoring system used for the game was also unorthodox, awarding points to the respective teams for first downs, tackles for loss, turnovers and a variety of other situational plays.
Sophomore safety William Moore (Hayti, Mo.) provided the biggest fireworks on the day for the Black squad when he intercepted a pass from senior quarterback Brandon Coleman (Miami, Fla.) in the first quarter and returned the ball 45 yards for a touchdown.
Redshirt freshman Connell Davis (Portland, Texas) recorded the only rushing touchdown of the game, a seven-yard scamper in the fourth quarter, and finished the day with a team-leading 44 yards on 11 attempts. Sophomore Earl Goldsmith (Denton, Texas) chipped in 40 yards on six rushes, including a 28-yard run that set up the game's first touchdown, while sophomore Jimmy Jackson (Caruthersville, Mo.) ran for 28 yards on the day.
Coffman's six catches and 66 yards were both team highs, just ahead of senior wide receiver Andrew Hoskins' (Plattsburg, Mo.) totals of five grabs and 64 yards. Coffman, Hoskins and senior tight end DeQuincy Howard (Tyler, Texas) all found the end zone for the Gold on the afternoon.
Redshirt freshman linebacker Chad Washington (Lancaster, Texas) led the Black with 10 tackles, including two for tackles for loss. Freshman defensive lineman Zach Milligan (Harden, Mo.) recorded one sack for a loss of 14 yards, senior defensive end Xzavie Jackson (Vacaville, Calif.) notched a sack for a loss of seven yards and sophomore defensive lineman Stryker Sulak (Rockdale, Texas) also had a sack that resulted in a six-yard loss. Sulak also had an interception in the game.
Junior kicker Adam Crossett (Liberty, Mo.) knocked home his only field goal attempt of the day, a 34-yard boot with less than two minutes left in the first half.
A crowd of 9,416 people at Faurot Field saw several Tiger players honored with spring "Most Improved" awards at halftime. Junior offensive lineman Monte Wyrick (Texarkana, Ark.) was named the team's Most Improved Offensive Lineman; sophomore defensive lineman Ziggy Hood (Amarillo, Texas) earned Most Improved Defensive Lineman; sophomore wide receiver Tommy Saunders (Kearney, Mo.) was tabbed as the Most Improved Wide Receiver; sophomore linebacker Van Alexander (Columbia, Mo.) was named Most Improved Linebacker; Howard earned Most Improved Tight End; junior defensive back Darnell Terrell (St. Louis, Mo.) won Most Improved Defensive Back honors; and junior tailback Marcus Woods (Farmington Hills, Mich.) took home the Most Improved Offensive Back award.
Former Mizzou quarterback Brad Smith (Youngstown, Ohio) added another award to his illustrious college career when he was honored at halftime as a National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) All-American.
The Black & Gold Game marked the conclusion of spring drills, with two-a-day practices set to begin in August. The Tigers will open their season at home on Sept. 2 when they take on Murray State. Log on to www.mutigers.com for all the latest on Mizzou football.
