Garrett McCaffrey and Sarah Zigler Named Student-Athletes of the Week

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Missouri seniors Garret McCaffrey and Sarah Zigler were named this week's Lathrop & Gage Varsity M Student-Athletes of the Week for their exceptional contributions to their respective athletic teams, combined with their strengths in the classroom and time spent in the local community.

A native of Federal Way, Wash., McCaffrey is a member of the Mizzou men's swim team. A broadcast journalism major, he earned a 3.38 grade-point average in the fall semester. The 2006 All-Big 12 Academic first team selection recently concluded his Mizzou career at the Big 12 Championships with a seventh-place finish in the 100-meter backstroke and an eighth-place finish in the 100-meter butterfly. As a junior in 2005, McCaffrey came in seventh in the 200-meter backstroke and had top-10 finishes in the 100-meter backstroke and the 100-meter butterfly at the Big 12 Conference Championships.

Zigler, a communications major, is a member of the No. 13 gymnastics team at Missouri. The Franklin, Tenn., native carries a 3.03 grade-point-average and earned All-Big 12 Academic first team honors this season. Throughout the 2006 season, Zigler won four event titles, including the Cat Classic individual bars title. During her senior season, Zigler set a new career-high on vault with a 9.850 against Arkansas on Jan. 13 and tied her personal-best on bars four times. She ranks tied for 45th in the nation on the uneven bars.

Zigler and the rest of the No. 13 Missouri gymnastics team earned a No. 3-seed in the NCAA Southeast Regional in Athens, Ga., on April 8 at 7 p.m. CDT. The Tigers will compete against top-seed Georiga, No. 2-seed Nebraska, No. 4-seed West Virginia, No. 5-seed North Carolina and No. 6-seed North Carolina State. The top two teams will qualify for the National Championships to take place April 20-22 in Corvallis, Ore.
