BOSTON--Tiger post-collegian Christian Cantwell opened his 2006 indoor campaign with an impressive early-season mark, finishing second in the men's shot put at the Boston Indoor Games Saturday. Cantwell, the 2004 World Indoor Champion, posted a 69 foot throw of his final attempt, coming within four centimeters of the winner Resse Hoffa.
Cantwell's (Eldon, Mo.) mark at the Boston Indoor Games also came within an inch of his personal best for the month of January.
"I realized that when we did weight-ins that I was throwing an 18-pound shot the last two weeks," said Cantwell after the competition. "My technique was a little off. I'm in great shape. I'm focusing on indoor nationals and world championships. I'm more concerned about what's going on the next four or five weeks. At the same time, I hate losing."
Hoffa, the 2004 World runner-up to Cantwell, is the early leader of USATF's VISA Championship series through the first of four events.
Derrick Peterson, 2004 Olympian and Tiger post-collegian, placed seventh in the men's 1000-meter run, clocking 2:24.46.
ESPN2 will air a two-hour tape-delay broadcast of the meet starting this afternoon, Sunday, at 2 p.m., Central.
