COLUMBIA, Mo. - The University of Missouri women's soccer team tied a single-game record with nine assists in its dominating 7-0 victory over Arkansas State on Thursday night at Walton Stadium. Missouri (3-1-1) outshot Arkansas State
(1-4) 37-9 on the night, falling just one shot short of tying the school record for total shots in a game.
The Missouri offensive explosion saw six different Tigers find the back of the net, including two goals from junior Aria Hudetz, who was also credited with an assist in the game. Hudetz has all of her team-leading four goals in the last three games.
Mizzou senior Amber Swinehart opened the floodgates in the 12th minute when senior Jennifer Nobis dribbled to the left post and found Swinehart, who one-timed the ball into the net from seven yards out. Junior Elyse Nikonchuk also assisted on the goal.
In the 24th minute, Hudetz gathered a rebound after the Indians blocked a Mizzou shot and rolled the ball past the Arkansas State keeper for a 2-0 Tiger advantage. Six minutes later, Hudetz again notched a goal after senior Erica Pusch lofted a pass into the box to Hudetz, who blasted the ball into the upper netting.
Freshman Caroline Pohl scored Missouri's final first half goal in the 35th minute after chipping the ball over the Arkansas State goalie and into the net on a breakaway. Assisting on the goal were juniors Lauren Grice and Lauren Vineyard.
Mizzou's offensive onslaught continued in the second half as Pusch dribbled up the right sideline and found Hudetz in the box. Hudetz then eluded a defender and passed off to Vineyard, who fired the shot over the goalie and into the net for a 5-0 Tiger lead.
Two more goals in the span of a minute and a half in the 66th and 68th minutes by freshman Mo Redmond and sophomore Anne Baxter ended scoring for the Tigers on the night. Pohl had an assist on Redmond's tally and Redmond earned one on Baxter's goal.
With the win over Arkansas State, Mizzou has shutouts in its five games. Sophomore Laura Buehrig, freshman Mallory Forst and senior Kira Reyes combined for the shutout against the Indians, with Buehrig and Forst each posting two saves. The Tigers also remain perfect at Walton Stadium with a 4-0 mark at home.
Missouri travels to Iowa City, Iowa for a non-conference contest with Iowa on Sunday, Sept. 11 before returning to Walton Stadium for a matchup with North Dakota State on Tuesday, Sept. 13 to kickoff a five game home stand.
