Missouri Earns 1-1 Double-Overtime Tie Against Iowa State

Sept. 30, 2005

Box Score

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Missouri outshot Iowa State 7-2 in two overtime periods but could not find the back of the net as the Tigers earned a tough 1-1 double-overtime tie against the Cyclones in Ames, Iowa on Friday night.

On the night, Missouri (6-3-2, 1-1-1) recorded 21 shots to 13 for Iowa State (6-3-3, 1-1-1) and had a 7-6 shots on goal advantage. In typical Big 12 conference fashion, the game was physical, as three yellow cards were handed out and the teams combined for 30 fouls in the contest.

The Cyclones opened scoring in the 55th minute when a perfect cross from Iowa State's Stephanie Kaphingst found Amy Flores in the box. Flores jumped in the air and headed home a goal into the upper left netting for a 1-0 Cyclone advantage.

After several missed scoring opportunities for the Tigers, freshman Ashley Hamblin received a flick from senior Jennifer Nobis and dribbled the ball into the box and drilled a shot into the lower goal from the right post to tie to score at 1-1 in the 77th minute. Hamblin now has two goals on the season, with both her scores coming in her home state of Iowa.

The two teams played even in the remaining 23 minutes but Missouri managed to earn two corner kicks in the final seven minutes of regulation. However, the Cyclones managed to clear the kicks to maintain the tie score.

Seven minutes into the first overtime, senior forward Amber Swinehart sent a cross from the right post across the goalmouth to Nobis but Nobis' header skimmed the top of the crossbar.

Both teams began to press as the game entered the second overtime session. Two minutes into the period, Hamblin was brought down just outside the box for a Tiger free kick. Freshman midfielder Mo Redmond sent a rocket on goal but the ball was right at the Cyclone keeper.

With three minutes remaining in the game, junior midfielder Aria Hudetz took a left-footed shot from the right corner of the box that flew just wide of the goal. The Tigers had one last scoring opportunity as Nobis dribbled into the box and took a shot with seven seconds on the clock but the Iowa State keeper made the save to give the Tigers their second tie of the season.

Neither team could gain an advantage in the game's opening minutes. In the 12th minute, Nobis streaked down the left side of the field and sent a perfect pass to Amber Swinehart five yards in front of the net. Swinehart one-timed the ball but her shot soared high over the crossbar.

The Tigers mounted another attack in the 19th minute as Nobis ran down the left sideline and into the box. A Cyclone defender thwarted Nobis' run but the ball went to Ashley Hamblin, whose shot was blocked. Hamblin gathered her own rebound but her second shot attempt was blocked as well and Iowa State managed to clear the ball.

Missouri sophomore goalie Laura Buehrig saved five shots in net for the Tigers on the night.

Missouri next travels to Lincoln, Neb., for a contest against No. 25 Nebraska at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday. The Tigers then return home the following weekend for games against Oklahoma on Friday, Oct. 7 at 7:00 p.m. and Oklahoma State on Sunday; Oct. 9 at 1:00 p.m.
