Missouri Soccer Black and Gold Game Ends in Tie

Aug. 20, 2005

Columbia, Mo. -- The Tiger soccer team took on the Missouri men's club in its annual Black and Gold game at Audrey J. Walton Stadium and came away with a 5-5 tie on Saturday night. Mizzou came from behind to tie the game with a goal in the final period.

"This was a good experience for us to go up against a quality opponent," Head Coach Bryan Blitz said. "Playing the men's team allows us to go up against a team with some speed, which will help us throughout the season. This was also a good experience for our freshman to get some playing time in a game situation."

The men's club jumped to an early 1-0 lead in the first period but junior midfielder Aria Hudetz (Fort Collins, Colo.) offered the driving force necessary to tie the game at one. The Tigers pulled ahead on a goal by senior forward Jennifer Nobis (Quincy, Ill.) later in the first period.

Not to be outdone, the men's club tied the game with one second remaining in the first period. Sending the ball past the outstretched hands of Tiger sophomore goalie Laura Buehrig (Needville, Texas), the teams went to halftime tied at one.

Back for an abbreviated 30-minute second period, the men's team connected on a goal to go ahead 3-2.

Mizzou answered, as Nobis connected for her second goal of the game in the second period to once again bring the score to a tie. A goal by Hudetz, her second of the game, put the Tigers ahead 4-3 later in the period.

The men's team would take the lead away, scoring back-to-back goals in the third and final 30-minute period.

A goal by freshman forward Annie Meredith (Collinsville, Ill.) later in third period would tie the score at five, which is where it would stand when the game ended.

The Tigers will open their season against Arizona, Friday August 26, at 6 p.m. (CT) in Tucson, Ariz., before traveling to California for a noon game, Sunday, Aug 28. Fans can catch Missouri's first home game, Friday, Sept. 2, at 8 p.m. (CT) when the Tigers take on Indiana in the Big 12/Big Ten challenge.
