
Asigbee Wins Inaugural NACAC Heptathlon Championships

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - Former Tiger Fiona Asigbee secured victory in the women's heptathlon at the inaugural North America, Central America, and Caribbean (NACAC) Combined Event Championships on Saturday in San Juan, Puerto Rico, with a personal-best score of 5,868, the second-best score by an American this year. Asigbee won the event by over 250 points, carried by two individual-event victories and personal bests in three of the seven events.
Asigbee was part of a 1-2-3 American sweep in the event as Tracey Lawyer-Thomas placed second to Asigbee with 5,603 points. Jackie Poulson was third with 5,499.
Asigbee was off to a fast start on day one with a personal best in the first event, the 100-meter hurdles, clocking 13.63. After winning the hurdles, Asigbee won the high jump with a leap of 5-11¾ (1.82m). Asigbee placed second in both the shot put and 200-meter dash to carry the lead a personal-best score of 3,640 points after day one.
On Saturday, Asigbee gained four inches on her personal best in the long jump to begin day two, taking second in the discipline. After the javelin, Asigbee was 56 points ahead of Lawyer-Thomas heading into the final event, the 800-meter run. Asigbee placed second in the race with a time of 2:22.85, 17 seconds ahead of Lawyer-Thomas to take the overall heptathlon crown.
Asigbee placed tenth in last year's USATF Olympic Trials in Sacramento. Earlier this season, Asigbee won the heptathlon at the second-annual Audrey Walton Combined Events with a score of 5,773, her old personal best.
Asigbee will gear up in the next four weeks for the USATF Championships to be held June 23-26 in Carson, Calif., a suburb of Los Angeles.
Former Auburn Tiger Maurice Smith of Jamaica took the decathlon title with a score of 8,252, a new Central American and Caribbean record.

Peterson Sixth With Season Best at U.S. Open, Dunne Seventh
At Monday's Payton Jordan U.S. Open in Palo Alto, Calif., Tiger post-collegians Derrick Peterson and Timothy Dunne placed sixth and seventh, respectively, in the Visa 800-meter run. Peterson ran a season best, clocking 1:47.08, coming to the line in a three-person photo finish for fourth.
The race will be televised tonight, Monday the 30th, on a tape-delay basis on ESPN2 as part of their meet coverage which runs from 9 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., central. For more information on the event, visit usatf.org.
