SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - - No. 14 Mizzou fell to in-state rival Southwest Missouri State by a score of 2-1 on Tuesday night at Hammons Field in Springfield, Mo. The Tigers are now 30-11 on the season, while the Bears improve to 13-25.
SMS has won the last two meetings with the Tigers and take a 17-16 lead in the all-time series with MU.
Missouri was held to just three hits on the night, matching a season low for the Tigers.
SMS (12-25) scored in the bottom of the first inning when Adam Pummill, who led off the inning with a double and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, scored on a ground out by Jacob Hilgendorf.
The Bears threatened to increase the lead, but had base runners thrown out at home twice by MU outfielders. Sophomore leftfielder Hunter Mense threw out Kirk McConnell in the third innings and freshman centerfielder Evan Frey threw out Pummill in the fifth inning.
Mizzou tied the game in the top of the sixth inning as junior Trevor Helms walked to lead off the inning and advanced to third on back-to-back hit batters. He then scored MU's first run of the game on a wild pitch.
The lead was quickly reclaimed by SMS as it scored a run in the bottom of the sixth when Nolan Keane scored a run on a Tiger error.
The Tigers travel to Austin, Texas this weekend for a three-game series with Texas starting at 6:15 p.m. on Friday. Game two will get underway at 2 p.m. on Saturday and the series will conclude at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
Missouri and SMS will face off again one week from Tuesday when the Bears will visit Taylor Stadium at 6:30 p.m.
