Columbia, Mo. - The #47 Missouri tennis team picked up points in the Border Showdown defeating Kansas, 5-2 in the Green Tennis Center. With the victory the Tigers improve to 14-5 on the season and 4-4 in league play. The win marks the third consecutive time Missouri has posted a victory against Kansas and is only the seventh victory for the Tigers in 35 meetings.
Missouri captured the doubles point taking two of the three matches. This is the second consecutive doubles point the Tigers have taken after failing to pick it up against Texas A&M, last weekend. The tandem of senior's Carolyn Kramer and Katka Sevcikova continued its dominance overpowering the Kansas duo of Lauren Hommell and Christine Skoda, 8-2. Tigers Hana Kraftova and Charlotte Bellis also bolstered the Tigers defeating Ashley Filberth and Luiza Loureiro, 8-1.
In singles competition Missouri altered its lineup, placing sophomore Erika Josbena at the No. 5 spot and newcomer Lubica Nadasska at No. 4. The move proved to be a good decision as both posted victories. Sophomore Yelena Olshanskaya's 6-1, 6-3 win over Kansas's Brittany Brown clinched the team win for the Tigers.
"This was definitely a hard fought match, "said head coach Blake Starkey. "While this is a rivalry, we have a lot of respect for Kansas and their coaching staff and often times we pull for each other in other matches."
The Tigers head to Oklahoma next weekend for matches with Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, before returning home for its season finale against #13 Texas. Seniors Mary Barry, Katka Sevcikova and Carolyn Kramer will be recognized. All Missouri tennis matches are held in the Green Tennis Center and are open to the public.
