Mizzou Tennis Drops Two Matches

The Mizzou tennis team came up short over the weekend dropping matches to #15 Baylor and Texas Tech. The losses take the Tigers to 12-4 on the year with a 2-3 mark in Big 12 Conference play.
Facing the Bears, Baylor swept the Tigers with a 7-0 match victory. Due to inclement weather postponing start time in Waco, the match was moved to Ft. Worth where the teams agreed to wave the doubles round in order for Missouri to catch flights. "Wow is about all I can say about Baylor's squad," said Mizzou Head Coach Blake Starkey. "We obviously did not play our best match today, but we ran into a buzz saw nonetheless. Baylor made very few mistakes and just beat us soundly."
Squaring against the Red Raiders, Mizzou appeared to have the match won but came up short in the final moments. After dropping the doubles point, the Tigers rallied in singles action to tie the Raiders with three wins. The match came down to the No. 2 singles final against Tiger Hana Kraftova and Texas Tech's Janet Durham. Kraftova built a 5-2 lead in the third set, and seemed to have the team match in hand, but Durham fought off the lead and numerous team match points to come back to defeat Kraftova.
"This was a great college match but today just wasn't our day," said Starkey. "We positioned ourselves to win, which is always our goal, but things don't always go our way. Texas Tech -- specifically Janet Durham -- played a very brave match. Hana played well too, but blinked right at the end. Tech's crowd and Janet's play were just a little too much to overcome. Tech got it done today, and we didn't. We'll have a solid week of practice, and get ready for a good challenge against a strong Texas A&M team next weekend."
The Tigers return to Columbia on Sunday, April 3 at 1:00 p.m., when they take on #38 Texas A&M in the Green Tennis. All Mizzou home matches are open to the public.
