Scherzer remained in control, striking out the side in the bottom of the second inning making it a string of six straight Winthrop batters to go down on strikes.
In the bottom of the third, Chris Carrara and Heath Rollins would each reach on singles to start the inning. However, MU catcher Cosme Caballero threw out Carrara as he attempted to steal second and Rollins was erased on a pick off by Scherzer. Winthrop would take the lead from the Tigers with a three-run fifth inning on three singles and a walk. The Eagles would stretch it to a three-run lead with two-run home run by Daniel Carte in the sixth inning to make the score 7-4, which would be the game's final margin.
Scherzer struck out eight in 4.1 innings of work, allowing five runs, four of which were on earned, on seven hits. Senior Dustin Braud struck out four of the seven batters he faced in 1.2 innings out of the bullpen and junior Doug Mathis pitched the final two innings and did not allow a hit.
