COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Tigers notched a 1-1 double-overtime tie with Oklahoma on Friday night in front of the second largest crowd in Missouri soccer history. In a game that saw 107 minutes of scoreless action, 1,774 fans witnessed Missouri (6-4-3, 1-2-2) and Oklahoma (11-1-1, 3-0-1) score within a three minute span in the waning minutes of regulation to send the game into overtime.
"We're disappointed with the tie but we moved forward," said Missouri head coach Bryan Blitz. "Oklahoma is a good team, they're leading the conference at this point. We got some contributions again from our depth. They don't give very many goals away and they're a very defensive oriented team so they're hard to break down. "
After 83 minutes of scoreless play, the Sooners struck first when Kady Kelly dribbled past the Tiger defense and passed to Lauren MacIver in the box, who one-timed the ball into the upper netting for a 1-0 Oklahoma lead.
The Tigers intensified their attack after the Sooner goal and finally got on the scoreboard in the 86th minute with a goal from senior defender Erica Pusch. After gathering a loose ball in the box, Pusch fired a shot that was blocked by an Oklahoma player but the ball passed the goal line to knot the score at 1-1 and give Pusch her first goal of the season.
In the closing minute of regulation, freshman Ashley Hamblin fed freshman midfielder Mo Redmond a ball outside the box but Redmond's blast sailed high to send the game into overtime.
Missouri kept up its offensive game in overtime, outshooting Oklahoma 5-1 in the second overtime alone. With just over three minutes remaining in the game, senior forward Jennifer Nobis broke away from the Sooner defense and sent a floater on goal that Oklahoma keeper Jennifer Nichols grabbed.
One minute later, the Tigers looked poised to score when Redmond, stationed at the top of the box, sent a ball to a sprinting Pusch. Pusch reached the ball before the Oklahoma defense but her shot from the edge of the box flew just over the crossbar. Missouri's last scoring opportunity came with 1:27 on the clock when Redmond set herself at the top of the box and fired a rocket that sailed wide of the net.
"I was a different game because we both play the same style," said freshman defense Lindsay McCoy. "We both focus on defense and possession ball I thought we adjusted pretty well. We felt there was no way we could lose this game because we stayed with them and dominated at times."
Missouri outshot Oklahoma 26-18 in the game, including 6-2 in the two overtime sessions. Sophomore goalie Laura Buehrig recorded six saves in goal for the Tigers.
Missouri travels to Boulder, Colo. for a 4:00 p.m. CST contest against Colorado on Friday, Oct. 14 before heading to Lubbock, Texas as the Tigers face Texas Tech at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 16. Mizzou then returns home the following weekend for games against Texas and non-conference opponent Colorado College.
