LAWRENCE, Kansas - The Missouri Tigers gave up a goal in the 104th minute as the Kansas Jayhawks defeated the Tigers 3-2 in double-overtime in Lawrence, Kan. Missouri must now wait for the result of the Oklahoma-Oklahoma State game to know if they qualify for the Big 12 Tournament. The Tigers will qualify as the eighth and final seed if Oklahoma State loses or ties.
Both Missouri (9-7-3, 3-5-2 Big 12) and Kansas (11-6-1, 6-3-1 Big 12) dominated the game at times but the Tigers, who were whistled for 19 fouls against only nine for the Jayhawks, could not stop the game-winner in double-overtime.
Holly Gault collected a pass from Caroline Smith and put her shot past Tiger sophomore goalie Laura Buehrig to give Kansas a 3-2 double-overtime win in the 104th minute of play.
Just three minutes into the match, Kansas found the back of the net for a quick 1-0 advantage. After Buehrig made a diving save on a Jessica Smith shot, Caroline Smith tapped in the rebound from the far post.
The Tigers retaliated in the 22nd minute to tie the game at 1-1 when senior forward Jennifer Nobis dribbled up the middle of the field and fed a pass to oncoming senior forward Amber Swinehart. Swinehart crossed into the box and let loose a rocket past Jayhawk goalie Julie Hanley and into the lower right of the goal for a 1-1 score. The goal was the 12th of the season for Swinehart and with the assist, Nobis now stands alone as the single-season assist leader with 14 on the year.
A breakaway opportunity three minutes later nearly gave the Tigers their first lead of the game. Swinehart passed up to Nobis, who beat the Jayhawk defense and looked to have a clear shot at the goal. Nobis dribbled to the end line but Kansas' defense recovered and blocked her cross out of bounds. The Tigers could not convert on the ensuing corner kick.
With 42 seconds gone in the second half, Missouri struck again as Nobis and Swinehart combined for another Tiger goal. Just beyond midfield, Swinehart flicked a ball up to Nobis, who made a run up the right side of the field. Nobis dribbled into the 18, took a touch and unleashed a shot into the back of the net.
In the 58th minute, Kansas responded when Michelle Rasmussen struck a 25-yard bomb up into the upper netting to knot the score at 2-2. Jessica Bush earned an assist on the goal.
With nine seconds remaining in overtime, Kansas ripped a shot that barely sailed wide to send the game into overtime.
Less than two minutes into the first overtime, a game-winning goal by freshman forward Carolina Pohl was waived off after Pohl was whistled for a handball.
Buehrig tied a career-high with 10 saves in net for the Tigers.
If the Tigers make the Big 12 Tournament, they will play on Tuesday, Nov. 2 at 11:00 a.m. against the top seed in San Antonio, Texas.
