Columbia, Mo. - A hot-shooting University of Missouri men's basketball program ushered in the 2005-06 season at the Fifth Annual Black & Gold Game Friday (Oct. 21) evening as the Mizzou Black squad shot a sizzling 63.6 percent from the floor (14-of-22) to earn a 34-25 victory over Mizzou Gold in a 14-minute scrimmage to cap the evening's festivities.
Mizzou Black also hit an impressive 4-of-7 shots from beyond the arc and dished out nine assists compared to just three turnovers.
Sophomore Glen Dandridge led the Black's shooting effort from bonus distance, hitting a pair of treys en route to an eight-point night. Jimmy McKinney also hit a trey and tied for game-high scoring honors with 11 points. Sophomore point guard Jason Horton was also steady, dishing out five assists without committing a turnover, while "The Warrior" Marshall Brown added nine points on 4-of-6 shooting. The strong scrimmage capped an outstanding evening for Brown. The Austin, Texas, native also won the team's dunk contest, outlasting Dandridge, McKinney and freshman Leo Lyons.
Despite falling in the scrimmage, junior Thomas Gardner led Mizzou Gold with 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the floor. Gardner led all players with a 3-of-4 success rate from three-point range and paced the Gold squad to a 5-of-7 shooting night from bonus distance. Fellow junior Marcus Watkins added seven points, while newcomer James Douglas added three assists. Two of Douglas' three assists set up Gardner for three-point opportunities off of in-bounds plays. Senior Kevin Young added four points and three rebounds, tying the freshman Lyons for game-high honors on the glass.
The Tigers open the 2005-06 season on Nov. 2 when Bemidji State travels to Columbia, Mo., to open the exhibition season. Mizzou's first regular-season contest is scheduled for Nov. 14 vs. Sam Houston State in the opening round of the Preseason National Invitation Tournament.
