COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Missouri Tigers fell to No. 25 Nebraska 3-0 on Sunday afternoon in Lincoln, Neb. as the Huskers controlled the tempo the entire game.
Missouri (6-4-2, 1-2-1) managed six shots on goals to eight for Nebraska (7-3-1, 2-0-1) and was outshot 18-11. Each team was whistled for 10 fouls apiece in the physical game.
Less than four minutes into the game, the Huskers put themselves on top with a goal by Aysha Jamani that sailed past Tiger sophomore keeper Laura Buehrig and into the upper right netting for an early 1-0 Nebraska advantage.
Missouri had a prime scoring chance in the 21st minute when Tiger senior forward Amber Swinehart was one-on-one with the Husker goalie but the chance was negated when Swinehart was called offsides.
In the 31st minute, Nebraska almost went up 2-0 when a Husker shot from the left endline struck the right post and rebounded into the box. Missouri junior defender Meggie Malm easily headed the loose ball out to end the Husker opportunity.
Nebraska struck again in the 33rd minute when Vern Fitzgerald gathered a loose ball in the box and found Jamani, who knocked in the shot for a 2-0 Nebraska edge.
In the second half, the Tigers had a few good chances to get on the board but could not capitalize. Two minutes into the second frame, senior forward Jennifer Nobis received a ball from the top of the box, turned and fired a rocket on goal that Nebraska's freshman keeper, Jamie Klages, saved. Later, as Swinehart chased a service from Missouri's defensive end and collided with an oncoming Klages.
A shot by junior midfielder Aria Hudetz soared just over the crossbar in the 73rd minute and a 25 yard blast from junior midfielder Elyse Nikonchuk struck the crossbar in the 83rd minute that would have taken away Nebraska's shutout.
The Huskers ended scoring with a perfectly executed corner in the 59th minute. Brittany Timko lofted the corner kick to the far post and Selenia Iaccelli one-timed the pass into the goal for a 3-0 Nebraska advantage.
In net for the Tigers, Buehrig notched five saves in the game.
Missouri returns home on Friday, Oct. 7 for a contest against Oklahoma and a matchup with Oklahoma on Sunday, Oct.9. The Tigers then hit the road with games against Colorado and Texas Tech next weekend.
