COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Missouri Track & Field team has been gearing up this week for the 16th Annual Missouri-Kansas-Kansas State Triangular meet to be held this Saturday in Manhattan, Kan. As part of the only track meet in the country to be scored with a combined total of men's and women's events, the three rivaled teams will continue tradition, coming together to provide a community service, collecting Teddy Bears for the Riley Country Sheriff Department's Bears on Patrol program. The events Saturday are slated to begin at 11 a.m. with the field events, track events to get underway at 2 o'clock.
Since the competition between the three schools began in 1990, Kansas State has won 13 of the 15 contests, including the past six. The Tigers won their only title in 1998. While the Tiger men's team is ranked 24th in the country by the Trackwire Top 25 and have a combined 43 male and female athletes in the top 10 of the conference performance list entering the meet the Tigers know that this meet is about more than winning.
Every year the meet's host rotates between the three schools and they are responsible for putting together a community service project that the teams will participate. This year, the Wildcats are working with the Riley County Sheriff's Office to collect as many teddy bears as possible for the department's Bears on Patrol Program. Children of victims and suspects receive these bears when they are unwittingly in difficult situations during and after crimes being committed. Last year, the Tigers hosted and collected stuffed animals and toys to be delivered to the Columbia's Ronald McDonald house.
The Tigers themselves are coming off a successful start to the season from last weekend's Missouri Invitational. Eleven Tigers took event championships including freshmen Tyler Dailey in the men's weight throw, Kasey Kimball in the women's 800 meter, and Elisha Hunt in the women's weight throw. Dailey entered the Tiger Top Five All-Time with his first collegiate competion of his career with a throw of 60 feet, 3 inches (18.36m) and currently stands fourth in the Big 12 Conference.
