COLUMBIA, Mo. - Missouri senior-to-be Chris Mabry (Leawood, Kan. / Bishop Miege HS) and junior-to-be Shawn Jasper (Marthasville, Mo. / Francis Howell HS / Newman Univ.) have completed the first round of stroke play at the 105th U.S. Amateur in Ardmore, Pa.
Mabry is in a tie for 99th place after carding a 4-over-par 74 at Philadelphia Country Club. Mabry parred the first seven holes before notching a birdie on the par-4 eighth hole. He then gave three strokes back to the field on the next two holes, with a bogey at the ninth and a double-bogey on the 10th. After a birdie-4 on the 12th, Mabry bogeyed 15, 17 and 18.
Jasper, playing on the Merion Golf Club track that will serve as home of the match-play portion of the tournament beginning Wednesday, is two strokes back in a tie for 144th place following his opening 76. He was even on the par-3's and par-5's, yet a pair of double bogeys - on 8 and 18 - derailed his round.
In Tuesday morning's second round, Mabry will head off of Merion's 10th tee at 7:37 a.m. CDT, while Jasper will tee off at 8:27 am. CDT from the first tee at Philadelphia Country Club.
The low 64 players in the 312-golfer field following Tuesday's second round will advance to match-play competition. The cut line is currently at 2-over; Charlie Beljan, a junior-to-be at New Mexico, is the first-round leader following a round of 6-under 64 that included nine birdies.
