Kelly to Play For State Amateur Title

June 25, 2005

COLUMBIA, Mo. - With two more match-play wins on Saturday, Mizzou sophomore John Kelly (St. Louis, Mo. / Christian Brothers College HS) advanced to the 2005 Missouri State Amateur championship match. Sunday's 36-hole final will pit two of the lowest seeds, as the No. 57-seeded Kelly will face 58th seeded Matthew Keith of Springfield.

Kelly's day at Ozark's Millwood Golf & Racquet Club started with a 4-and-2 quarterfinal win over Springfield's Matthew Bortis, who entered the match-play portion of the tournament as the top seed. Detailed results of the afternoon semifinal matches were not immediately available.

Kelly will try to become the first Tiger to win the Missouri Amateur since Mark McBride won back-to-back titles in 2000 and 2001. McBride was the first repeat winner since Tom Watson in 1970 and 1971.
