Max Scherzer Receives Another All-America Honor

June 17, 2005

Missouri sophomore right-hander Max Scherzer has been named a second team All-American by Baseball America. Scherzer was 9-4 this season and set a new school record with 131 strikeouts, which led the Big 12 Conference and is fifth best in the nation.

Last week, Scherzer was named to the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper's All-America Second Team.

He led the Big 12 with a .163 opponent's batting average and finished the season with a 1.82 ERA. He had a complete-game victory at No. 5 Nebraska on May 6 and pitched the first seven innings of a combined no-hitter against then-No. 25 Texas Tech on April 1. He struck out a career-high 14 in the no-hitter.

Scherzer was named the Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Year and twice earned the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week honor. Scherzer was selected the National Collegiate Baseball Writers' Association National Pitcher of the Week, along with a Collegiate Baseball Newspaper's National Player of the Week on April 4, following the no-hit performance.

He has been invited to the 2005 USA Baseball National Team Trials in June. He has also been named to the watch list for the Xanthus Dick Howser Award, the Golden Spikes Award, the Clemens Award and the Wallace Award.
