WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Mizzou men's golf team will enter the 2005 Big 12 Conference Championships with a collective head full of steam, as the Tigers capped their regular-season schedule in impressive fashion Sunday afternoon by capturing the Boilermaker Invitational team title. The eight-stroke win over host Purdue is MU's second-straight team title, and marks just the second time in school history that the Tigers have won two tournaments in the same semester.
The Tigers did it by firing a tournament-low 3-under-par 285 on Sunday, giving them a three-round total of 3-under 861 for the tournament. Missouri was the only school to shoot under par for the weekend.
Sunday's low round for Mizzou was posted by sophomore Shawn Jasper (Marthasville, Mo. / Francis Howell North HS / Newman Univ.), who fired a 4-under 68 to finish in a tie for 34th. Jasper was one of only five players to shoot in the 60's on Sunday, and only one other golfer went lower than Jasper: Purdue's Johan Edin, who carded a course- and school-record 63. Edin competed as a non-scoring individual, however, meaning his 9-under 207 for medalist honors couldn't help the Boilermakers in the team race.
Junior Ben Scott (Lancashire, United Kingdom / St. Theodore's HS) was the Tigers' best finisher, placing third for his third-straight top-10 finish after shooting a second-straight 70. Eight of Scott's last nine rounds, including his last six, have come in at par or better.
Sophomore Tyler Dunn (Godfrey, Ill. / Alton HS), who came into the final round in second place, salvaged his first career top-five showing despite shooting a 2-over 74 to tie for fifth. Sophomore John Kelly (St. Louis, Mo. / Christian Brothers College HS) earned his best finish of the season with a tie for 11th place following a 73, and junior Chris Mabry (Leawood, Kan. / Bishop Miege HS) closed out the Tiger effort with a 75 to tie for 16th.
The only other time Missouri has won two tournaments in the same semester came in the spring of 1995, when the Tigers won the SMSU Invitational and The Legends. The school record for tournament titles in an academic year is three, set by the 1983-84 squad that won Mizzou's last conference title.
The Tigers have nearly two weeks off before competing in the Big 12 Championships, to be played at Whispering Pines Golf Course in Trinity, Texas, from Friday, April 29-Sunday, May 1.
