Jasper and Patten Earn Student-Athlete Honors

Columbia, Mo. - Junior Ashley Patten of the Missouri women's track team and sophomore Shawn Jasper of the men's golf team were named this week's Lathrop & Gage Student-Athletes of the Week for strengths in their respective sports, in the classroom and contributions to the community.

A two-time All-American, Patten (Clarkston, Mich.) earned her most recent honor after finishing eighth in the 800-meter run (2:11.90) of the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, March 12, in Fayetteville, Ark. Earlier in the season, Patten finished first in the 1,000-meter run (2:45.96) at the 2005 Indoor Big 12 Track and Field Championships, in Lincoln, Neb., Feb. 26. Patten is a Business Management major with a 3.19 grade-point average and donates her time to the Ronald McDonald House Benefit.

Jasper, a native of Marthasville, Mo., enters his sophomore year at Missouri after transferring from Newman University. Undecided on his major, Jasper holds a 3.0 grade-point average. Helping his team to a fourth place showing, out of 14 teams, at the Stevinson Ranch Invitational, March 22, in Stevinson, Calif., Jasper closed the tournament with scores of 79, 74 and 81 to tie for 48th. Since joining the program, Jasper has been involved in the Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) canned food drive and Central Missouri Food Pantry.

The Missouri track and field team will host the Missouri Relays Friday, April 2, and Saturday April 3, at the Audrey J. Walton Track and Field Complex, while the men's golf team will return to action Monday April 4, and Tuesday, April 5, in the Belmont Invitational in Franklin, Tenn.
