MANHATTAN, Kan. - The Missouri Track & Field team placed second against Kansas and Kansas State in the 16th Annual Triangular meet on Saturday afternoon in Manhattan, Kan. The Tigers claimed 236 points on the day, closing the gap on Kansas State, who won their seventh-straight triangular, to 19 points from the 50 that K-State has won by in the last three years before.
The Tigers earned 49 of their points from the women's distance core, who swept the event titles in every distance from 800 meters to 3000 meters and took the 4x800-meter relay title. The most stirring performance of all came from junior Ashley Patten (Clarkston, Mich.) in the 1000-meter run. Her time of 2:46.50 broke the Ahern Fieldhouse's record, slashed the meet record by three seconds, and propelled her to second all-time at Missouri in the event. Senior Serena Ramsey won the 3000-meter with a time of 9:44.07, a six-second personal best. Senior Jill Petersen took the title in the mile run at 4:56.94, part of a 1-2 sweep with Tiger Kristin Hansen. And, freshman Trisa Nickoley was the winner of 800 meter at 2:12.41.
Redshirt freshman Tyler Dailey (Joplin, Mo.) earned an NCAA provisional qualifying mark and a personal best in the men's weight throw with a toss of 62 feet, 10 inches (19.15m), placing fourth in a competition that produced five competitors over 60 feet. Dailey also had a personal best in the shot put, 54-6 (16.61m). All-in-all four-of-five Tigers gained PRs in the men's weight throw and three-of-four did so in the shot. Junior Bill Hobson placed second in the shot near a personal best with a toss of 56-2½ (17.13m). For the second-consecutive week, senior Adam Burla bolstered his personal bests in both of two events, the weight throw (55-9¼) and shot put (55-3).
The Tigers took event championships in several other events. Senior sprinter Marquis Davis (O'Fallon, Ill.) won the men's 200 in 22.18 and took second in the 60-meter dash, clocking in at 6.88. Senior Jenny Bybee (Springfield, Mo.) leaped to five feet, six inches in the women's high jump to take the event title.
Senior decathlete Brandon Goebbert continues to make leaps and bounds in the men's pole vault, gaining a personal best in the event for the second straight week with a mark of 16 feet, ¾ inches (4.90m).
Every year since 1999, Kansas and Missouri has alternated spots as the second or third team in the meet. Missouri last won the Triangular title in 1998.
